Dreaming of a cosy winter escape but can only get away for a few days? Maybe a staycation in the country is what you need.
Because sometimes all you need is a change of scenery that’s not too far from home.
From tiny homes to luxurious country estates and cosy guesthouses, here we share six locations that are under (or around) two hours’ drive away from Canberra—perfect for a quick overnighter or a few relaxing days away.
Cubby & Co (Majura)

Can’t venture too far from home? Nestled in the leafy foothills of Mount Majura Winery, Cubby & Co is 15 minutes from the hustle and bustle of the city—but if you choose to stay in their tiny home Dinny, you’ll feel miles away.
Open during the winter while the Cubby & Co tents are closed, you don’t need to worry about the cold—with a shower, internal heating, and the promise of a luxurious stay, no matter the weather outside you’ll be sure to have a slow and relaxing time.
DO: From sampling local wine to stargazing in the vineyard, the whole point of getting away to Dinny is to slow down and unwind with the bare necessities. Pack a book and enjoy the simplicity of your stay.
EAT: If you don’t want to pack your own food, when booking Dinny add the Stay Local package to enjoy a complimentary wine tasting for two at Mount Majura Vineyard cellar door, your choice of one bottle of wine, and a chef’s choice dinner delivered from XO restaurant to the vineyard (and with the iconic restaurant closing its door in October, trust us when we say this add on is worth it).

Mona Farm (Braidwood)

A compelling curation of art, country life and Australian history, this luxurious estate is only an hour and 15 minutes away from Canberra. Home to one of the most diverse collections of contemporary art and sculptures in the region, plenty of friendly farm animals and seven historic guest houses, even just one night at Mona Farm will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated from the blend of old-world charm and new world comforts. And with the recent addition of The Shearer’s Quarters (a premium two-person guest house), it’s perfect for a romantic winter escape.
DO: From exploring the heritage-listed town of Braidwood (which is about a 20-minute walk from the farm) to wandering through the award-winning gardens and taking an interactive farm tour, your stay at Mona Farm will be full of history, art and culture. But of course, settling down for a cosy day in is also a good choice—especially if you book The Shearer’s Quarters and get the opportunity to take a dip in the heated spa.
EAT: From a private chef experience to a gourmet three-course meal that is personally delivered to your accommodation (all you need to do is warm, assemble and serve), Mona Farm does it all. But if you’d like to head into town, we recommend visiting Provisions Braidwood for a French breakfast complete with galettes and crepes. It’s très magnifique.

Set against a lazy creek on the fringe of Murrumbateman, the Redbrow Garden Guesthouse in Yass is the place to go for a getaway with a group. With views of the wetlands and garden, you can spend a weekend enjoying nature, lounging lazily next to an open fire, and picnicking with the wildlife (yes, picnics in winter are still lovely).
DO: Nestled between Canberra and the Murrumbateman cool climate wine region, there’s plenty to explore if you don’t want to bunker down in your accommodation. Head along to some of the local wineries to try award-winning wines, browse the boutiques and explore the myriad of galleries and design studios that are dotted around the region.
EAT: There’s plenty to choose from, but we suggest starting your morning on a sweet note at Murrumbateman Chocolate Co, before trying the jaw-dropping array of smoked meats, preserves, and wines at Poachers Pantry. Then, settle into cosy country wine bar Yazzbar for wine, tapas-style food and live music. It’s a foodie experience you won’t forget.

The Sir George (Jugiong)

Located in the sleepy village of Jugiong, The Sir George is a unique experience if you’re looking for something more bush. A classic country pub that was originally built in 1852, what makes this historic venue so special is how the accommodation fuses old and new—from the lovingly restored heritage stone stables to the luxurious black barns.
DO: You won’t find a lot here and that’s part of the charm. While away a day and soak in the quiet of the Jugiong Valley, indulge in a spa treatment at the local spa (which is just up the road) or head to the top floor of the pub to explore the Curators Collective to discover something stunning homewares, fashion and accessories.
EAT: Don’t want to cook? You won’t go hungry when staying at The Sir George. Book a table at the restaurant to enjoy fresh, local and seasonal produce with a glass of something cold, visit the artisan bakery (which is also located on-site) for a coffee and freshly baked sourdough or walk next door for a meal at Long Track Pantry—a food store and café that hand makes relishes, preserves, jams and more.
