Domestic violence doesn’t take a holiday – and this Christmas, DVCS needs your help

Posted on

Many of us might be counting down the days until the summer holidays officially begin but Canberra’s only 24/7 domestic and family violence crisis support service is preparing for what is usually their busiest time.

Because while many locals might get a holiday, no matter the date the Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS)will still be open for locals impacted by domestic and family violence.

After headlines of violence against women and children have made the news time and time again in 2024, it goes without saying that across the country we have seen an increase in the rate of domestic violence incidences higher than ever before.

At the time of writing this article, 98 Australian women have been killed in 2024 according to Australian Femicide Watch, and while it doesn’t only affect women (one in 18 men experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a current or previous cohabiting partner in 2021/22), the truth is simple: domestic violence has become an epidemic.

Remaining operational throughout the entire Christmas and New Year period – including over Public Holidays – DVCS is remaining committed to providing critical support to those who need it most, especially during the holiday season.

And as more people come forward for help and support, with December consistently acknowledged as one of the highest-recorded months for family violence incidents, they’re reaching out for help to continue to be able to provide support to those in need.

Calling for Canberrans to be a part of their End of Year Appeal, no donation is too small this Christmas and will make a real impact by helping them provide essential resources, including:

  • Safe phones and phone credit so people can stay connected with family, friends, and support services.
  • Simple meals or groceries for those facing challenging weeks.
  • A safe night of emergency accommodation.
  • Gift certificates for family activities like visits to Questacon or pool entry fees, creating moments of joy and connection.

Aiming to raise $10,000, DVCS hopes to help Canberrans find safety and hope these holidays.

Because every person deserves safety, dignity and a chance to live life free of violence.
