Netflix and Stan: What to watch in June
Posted on
As winter sets in, there’s nothing we love more than a cosy Netflix or Stan session.
Here are our recommendations for your next binge watch.
ALI’S WEDDING
Modern Family alumni Jeffrey Walker directs this drama-comedy-romance where Ali, the son of a Muslim cleric, finds himself stuck in between his sense of duty to his family and following his heart.
Based on real-life events, this film showcases the ups and downs of Islamic life in Australia.
SENSE8
If you, along with literally every other Sense8 fan was infuriated at the cancellation of this show you’ll be glad to hear that your voice did matter and it was surely heard! Netflix announced the series was to have a proper send-off in the form of a two-hour series finale. Woo-hoo!
GLOW
Season 2 will see these Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling dealing with their newfound fame. They become local celebrities and will have to confront the good with the bad and come to terms with the realities of stardom.
Ruth and Debbie’s friendship is still on the line, will they fight through it together or fight against each other? Better to watch this one unfold from the sidelines – unless you’ve already picked your corner.
DOWNTON ABBEY
Downton had been sitting patiently on my Netflix watch list for months until I had some time off work and decided to give it a go and my, oh my, there are NO regrets when it comes to this stunning show.
If you missed the Downton-mania that swept the world when this show premiered, this series is set in the fictional Downton Abbey, a Yorkshire country house of the Earl and Countess of Grantham. The story follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants.
So make a nice cup of tea, get warm and comfortable because once you start this show you’ll be transported into a different era where anything you originally had on your schedule won’t matter anymore – cancel everything.
HANNIBAL
Gifted criminal profiler Will Graham has a distinct way of thinking that allows him to empathise with anyone. In Hannibal, he teams up with cunning psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter to solve murders. The two form a partnership and it seems that there is no villain they can’t catch together – but Lecter hides a dark secret.
His own brilliant mind has gone to the dark side and he has more in common with the criminals they hunt than Graham could’ve ever fathomed.
RAKE
Cleaver Green is a wildly brilliant yet self-destructive criminal barrister. With his chaotic personality mixed with his equally chaotic career comes a narrative that will bring you many snorts of laughter. If you think your life is a little all over the place, watch Rake – Cleaver will make you feel so much better in no time.
A lot of the scenes in this show are also filmed here in Canberra, so you might even see someone you know playing a background extra!
