A high tea with an uplifting goal

“Liz Baker started the charity ‘Uplift Project‘ to provide bras to women in developing countries who may not have access to bras.”

Many of us long for the moment we get to walk through the door of our home and take off our bra after a long day.

However, it’s not a luxury bestowed to every woman and perhaps one we take for granted.

In many developing regions it is extremely difficult for women to access bras and often the cost is too high, when basic needs like food and shelter must be prioritised. While bras provide support, comfort and dignity to women, in countries were the weather is humid, they also offer protection from fungal infections.

In 2005, Liz Baker started the charity ‘Uplift Project‘ to provide bras to women in developing countries who may not have access to bras.

This Sunday 5 June from 12pm, NewActon’s Parlour and Uplift Project will come together to host a charity high tea, to help those women who are not fortunate enough to have easy access to bras and underwear.

“Hearing about these women who don’t even have access to a bra, it’s something that’s so simple in any woman’s life, but for these women in remote areas it can make a huge difference to their quality of life.” says Alex Johnson from Parlour about why partnering with Uplift was so important.

“It’s something we have always wanted to do, we’ve been planning the event on and off for over six months” explains Alex.

The high tea will be held at Parlour, where guests will enjoy a variety of sweet and savoury treats, as well as being able to join in fun games with great prizes up for grabs.

“Everything for high tea is made in house, not brought in,” says Alex. “The chefs are all about keeping it balanced with sweets and savouries, but we are adding some new elements and we want to keep that a bit of a surprise!”

While you enjoy high tea nibbles, you will also have the pleasure of sipping on local sparkling wine and delightfully warming teas from sponsor The Rabbit Hole tea bar in Sydney.

Having set a goal of sending 250 bras to Uplift, guests are encouraged to donate old or new bras. I dare say that most of us would have a bra hiding in the back of our drawer which is ready to be donated, you know the one… the one that never fit quite right.

“People are more than welcome to donate money but what we are really after are bras! All shapes and sizes, from A through to F cups. Things like maternity bras, mastectomy and even padded bras – nothing will go to waste!” says Alex.

While guests are encouraged to donate bras, Parlour will also be donating part of all ticket sales to assist with the costs of shipping.

“To think that simply by grabbing an old bra from your underwear drawer can positively affect and empower women in such a way is amazing,” says Alex.

Can’t make it to the event but still want to help?

If you can’t make the event but still want to donate bras,  just drop them at Parlour in NewActon. They’ll collect them all and arrange with Uplift to get them where they need to go!
