What to stream in July

Cosy nights call for excellent TV.
Luckily, we’ve entered a new era of quality streaming, with films, documentaries, TV shows, comedy specials and more available at the touch of a button, for a comparatively small price.
Netflix and Stan might be the big guns, but don’t dismiss the free providers. With SBS on Demand’s wide range of award-winning series and films (especially crime, drama and foreign) and ABC iView’s homegrown humour, drama current affairs, the variety has never been better. All you need is an internet connection.
Here’s what to watch this July.
The Handmaid’s Tale

Based on Margaret Atwood’s bestselling novel, this series takes us to the dystopian society of Gilead in the former United States where protagonist Offred is determined to survive the harrowing system that stole her daughter away and forces fertile women, such as herself, into sexual servitude in an attempt to repopulate the world.
Disturbing and politically charged, The Handmaid’s Tale Season Two just been released and is ready for watching. Just not with the kids.
Dear White People

A satirical powerhouse, Dear White People focuses on the struggles and stories of people of colour at a fictional Ivy League college in the States.
Their days are spent dealing with slippery politics of identity whilst romance blooms, racial tensions brew and secret societies plot behind the scenes.
After the film of the same name was released in 2014, Director Justin Simien returned to write and direct a series due to its immense popularity.
Suits
Famous for more than just the Duchess of Sussex, Suits is a legal drama filled with college dropouts scoring associate jobs, marriage scandals and shady dealings.
The story is set in a Manhattan law firm and is seven seasons long with an 8th on the way, making it the perfect excuse to snuggle up in the cold Canberra weather and binge.
Queer Eye
These five fabulous friends are on a mission to serve up hip tips, makeovers and heartfelt reveals in Atlanta. Have a tissue box close at hand for this emotional rollercoaster of life-changing glow ups.
Queer Eye has two seasons, with a recent episode being filmed in Yass. A hip hooray for Aussie’s representing!
The Crown
Are you a massive Downtown Abbey fan? Love some aristocratic drama and a bit of history thrown into the mix? The Crown is your next binge watch. Following the tumultuous life of Queen Elizabeth II from her marriage to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh to the premiership of Margaret Thatcher, The Crown tells a story of fame, responsibility and destiny.
This series is intended to last over sixty episodes so get ready to emotionally invest yourself in the characters and continuing era of the aristocracy.
Orange Is the New Black
An American comedy-drama, OITNB follows a privileged New Yorker who ends up in a women’s federal prison after a past crime catches up with her.
Nominated for twelve Primetime Emmy Awards, OITNB was renewed for a fifth, sixth and even seventh season after the world became obsessed with the drama of drug smuggling, prison brutality and steamy relationships.
