A ‘blooming beautiful’ way to learn the art behind florals

Posted on

Flower school has come a long way since Kath Day-Knight’s TAFE floral arranging venture in Kath and Kim.

No longer a daggy pastime for retirees, floral courses have become decidedly hip, with floral ‘inspo’ bombarding Pinterest boards and a growing number of costumers craving seasonal blooms with a personalised touch.

Canberra’s own ‘petal pushers’ are well catered for with Kingston flower business The Floral Society launching the second term of their popular Floral School in May.

The six-week workshop series, “Blooming Beautiful,” includes lessons in vase arrangements, terrariums, flower crowns, floral wreaths and making the perfect handheld posy and button holes – meaning budding florists or locals itching to make their own mark on a bunch of blooms will be right in their element.

The Floral Society’s owner Renee Douros says Flower School was launched after queries from customers on floral techniques at the business’ interactive Flower Bar.

“The school was launched due to this demand and provides our customers the confidence to work with flowers, removing the intimidation behind flower arranging and leaving them inspired to work freely with blooms in a spirit of exploration and creativity,” says Renee.

During the course students will learn the tricks of the trade, including ways to experiment with flowers to create designs that are uncomplicated and inexpensive without sacrificing on style.

“Each week we take you on a journey through a new look, inspired by a colour palette and decorating trend, teaching you how to build unique creations to suit any event, interior or milestone,” says Renee.

“At the end of each of the six classes, students take home their very own floral-creation, having mastered eight key techniques that will basically see them through any floristry project in the future. In addition to becoming a flower-master, it’s a really fun activity to do with the girls, your mum or a way for students to get some ‘me time’.”

Renee says the school’s first term had an “overwhelmingly positive” response, and believes this is a nod to the resurgence of the arts and crafts movement.

“DIY inspiration is flourishing everywhere from magazines to blogs, Pinterest, Etsy and Instagram,” Renee says.

“[This] series is the perfect introduction to floristry for those with very little to no experience caring for and arranging blooms. It’s also great for those who want to refresh the skills they have gained from some prior experience.”
