Do you find concealing hard? Do you buy those concealing tubes and find they just aren’t doing the trick?

I hate walking down the aisles of places like Big W, Kmart, Target and the like and seeing cosmetic companies try to sell you one colour as a concealer, and all it is, is foundation in a small bottle.

Let me let you in on a little secret – it takes more than one colour to conceal. And the colour you choose is extremely important.

As a makeup artist you are required to conceal a number of different things, from tattoos on the day of a wedding, birthmarks, scars, pimples, freckles, you name it, we’ve most likely covered it!

The secret to good concealing is the colour contrast. With every colour there is an opposing colour that can cover it.

Something red (like a pimple) will need a different opposing colour than something brown (like a freckle) or blue (like bags under the eyes).

Luckily there are some AMAZING companies and products out there that take away all the hard thinking.

Which Products?

concealer-wheelThe great product for concealing is the Kryolan Conceal Wheel. It uses the exact principal I am preaching – colour contrast! It provides you with 5 different colours to conceal IT ALL! It even has a cheat sheet on the back so you don’t have to memorise what they’re all for.

Depending what you’re covering you want at least two colours that will contrast red and blue so that you can cover pimples and bags under the eyes (if needed).

Napoleon also offers a Correct and Conceal palette with the three contrasting colours which is a little bit cheaper and should do the trick for your everyday wear.

There’s also a great concealer palette by Makeup For Ever which is a little bit more expensive but provides you the 5 different options like the Kryolan.

How To?

When using your concealer make sure you only place it on the area you’re concealing. You want to correct the colour of the pimple, not the skin around it.

It will look a little odd as the concealing colour is so strong, but you’ll then go over the top with your foundation.

If you normally use a foundation brush or your fingers you’ll want to swap to a sponge for the concealed areas. DO NOT SWIPE. Swiping over the top of your concealer will just cause it to move.

You want to dab over the top using a damp sponge or your fingers. Continue to dab until you get the desired colour/coverage you’re after.

Finish off with a layer of translucent powder to make sure your concealer and foundation sets and won’t budget during the day.

Need convincing? This video shows the power of concealer and using the right products. You can see the makeup artists using brushes to place the concealer and then they go over the top with foundation, just like you would on yourself.
