Dermaplaning: the results are in
Posted on
I said I was going to do it and I did it. I had a dermaplaning treatment.
I’d been thinking about it for a while, weighed up the pros and cons and eventually went for it.
If you don’t know what dermaplaning is, check out the post I wrote a few weeks back or here’s a summary:
A specially designed blade is glided across your face, removing dead skin cells and vellus hair – the soft fluff stuff on our faces. This reveals the fresh cells underneath, allowing beauty products to penetrate deeper so we can maximise the results.
And no, the hair that comes off your face won’t grow back thicker because it’s not cutting the hair in a blunt way like you do with a razor, which affects the follicle. I found this out when, full disclosure, I was offered a treatment free of charge at Riana’s Health Skin Care Clinic after owner Riana Janse van Rensburg read my dermaplaning editorial.
So what was it like?
THE TREATMENT
When I arrived at the clinic, my makeup was taken off and my skin cleansed and prepped to remove excess oils. Riana then took out a brand new blade that’s been specially designed for dermaplaning, as new blades are used for everyone having the treatment.
Then I prepared myself for what was about to happen – a scalpel looking thing about to glide across my face.
It was the strangest feeling, probably because it was something completely new to me, but not at all painful and I got used to it pretty quickly.
We had no nicks or cuts and I walked out looking like nothing had happened. There was no down time. You can even put makeup on immediately afterward.
One thing to be aware of is the skin is incredibly exposed with the dead cells removed so apply sunscreen at the very least to protect your newly surfaced skin from the elements.
THE RESULTS
It’s been a couple of weeks since the treatment and there have been a couple of breakouts along the jaw area but that doesn’t surprise me, considering the high-level exfoliation that took place.
For someone who hates touching her face because of all the germs you put on there, that’s all I wanted to do. It was so smooth and still is. My makeup does go on better and looks better too.
I would definitely recommend this treatment to you. I understand it’s not for everyone and I also understand it can be addictive but most importantly, it should be done by a professional and you should chat to a skincare expert or dermal clinician before giving it a go.
Let me know if you have any questions or want any more information on my experience.
