Avoiding the makeup meltdown: heatwave-resistant tips

Posted on

I’m not a huge fan of the heat…being a makeup artist, anything that causes my face to sweat and my makeup to clog gets a big thumbs down from me!

Luckily the science of makeup has come a long way, and there are various products out there that can help you keep your makeup in good condition while the rest of your body suffers from heat exhaustion.

The one product you MUST use is sunscreen! Make sure your foundation is at least 30 SPF, or start wearing it under your foundation.

Now for the rest…

Sweating

If you suffer from face sweating, you’re not alone. I can get a lovely glistening top lip when the temperature gets above 35c. The folk at at Neat Feat (stay with me) have created a product called 3b Face Saver. This is a great product for summer as it actually prevents excessive facial perspiration and doesn’t clog your pores.

Apply this before your primer and foundation and you’ll notice the difference. Just $12.69 from your local Chemist Warehouse.

Makeup Sealer

Another great product to get on board with is the Model in a Bottle Makeup Setting Spray. This little beauty goes on over the top of your makeup and helps seal your makeup and doesn’t clog your pores.

This isn’t readily available in stores but you can order it online through Makeup and Glow for $29.00. it also comes in regular and sensitive skin to suit everyone.

Blotting Paper

Blotting paper is great for on the go. It’s a small square of paper that absorbs oil from the face – great if you need a quick freshen up but don’t have time to stand in front of the mirror for 10 minutes.

Clean and Clear offer a great product called Oil Absorbing Sheets, available at most pharmacies and small enough to keep in your bag for emergencies.

Good Skin

For those with good skin it’s time for you to embrace the ‘less is more’ philosophy. Invest in a good BB Cream or Tinted Moisturiser to see you through the heatwave. Try not to wear heavy makeup when possible, or if you do, remove it as soon as you no longer need to be wearing, like as soon as you get home from work.

For a budget-friendly option, try the Garnier BB Cream  at $13.95; or for the more luxe, go for the Clinique Age Defence BB Cream $53.95.

Not-so-great Skin

If you suffer from blemishes, then this is the time you need to stick to your cleansing routine. With all the extra sweat your face will be producing, you need to cleanse and re-moisturise the face twice a day at the very least.

If you wear your makeup a little heavier because of your blemishes that’s not a problem; keep your usual routine, however, have a ‘makeup holiday’ at least once a week – a day where you wear no makeup at all, allowing your skin to breath and rejuvenate.
