Local Lust List: what we love in November

Posted on

We love supporting local businesses here at HerCanberra. From the small independents to the larger centres which employ a multitude of Canberrans, every dollar that you spend locally helps our economy.

We see so many ‘must have’ lists that are choc full of items from overseas companies or interstate online retailers, so we have set out to create a regular ‘local’ lust list…the things that we love that you can find in your own backyard. Rather than clicking to buy, get out and discover the amazing things that our city has to offer.

This is what we’re lusting after this month…

Taste a piece of chocolately heaven

Robyn Rowe’s award-winning chocolates are guaranteed Fair Trade and contain no artificial preservatives…They are made to be consumed sooner rather than later which suits us just fine! Robyn studied the art of chocolate-making in both Australia and Belgium before opening her shop Chocolat d’Or in Murrumbateman.

These little morsels of heaven are handcrafted on site using traditional European methods, and are inspired by the fresh produce abundant in the Canberra region. I am salivating over the Sea Salted Caramel however could be tempted to try all 26 different varieties!

Take a drive out to Chocolat d’Or at 1153 Nanima Road Murrumbateman or find them at the Capital Region Farmers Market, EPIC; Clonakilla Winery, Crisps Lane, Murrumbateman; Shaw Vineyard Estate, Isabel Drive, Murrumbateman; Flint in the Vines, Shaw Vineyard Estate and Yass Valley Information Centre

Light up your life

The girls at Mussen filled me in on the secret to why their boutique is smelling so divine at the moment: Lumiére by Silvania. This Canberra candle business is special because they are handmade, 100% soy wax with no nasties and scented with the prettiest of scents that will brighten up the most mundane of days. Try the Sweet Pea pictured here ($30 for 250ml at Mussen) for a burst of springtime. Pop into Mussen for the full range or head to the Lumiére by Silvana facebook page. Life is short, burn the candle.

Start sparkling

Join The Champagne Dame, Kyla Kirkpatrick, for a journey into the wonderful world of champagne and be introduced to some of the colourful characters who have interwoven their lives with champagne. Kyla’s obsession began with the region of Champagne (not the wine, believe it or not), an incredible region that happens to be the home of incredible wine. Just in time for Christmas and dinner party season, the Champagne Dame will host a Champagne Masterclass for 50 VIPs at Canberra Centre on Saturday 29 November. Guests will receive one French sparkling and four champagne tastings throughout the 1.5 hour presentation, which includes a performance of Sabrage and a style bag to take home. Spoil yourself with an early Christmas and book in for an exploration of the region and its history through a glass of bubbles (or four).

Do the tango

Every piece is designed with the signature fun, sassy, colourful aesthetic style carried through the whole collection.

Spread some Christmas Cheer

For most, Christmas is a time of joy. A time to spend with family and friends, celebrating the end of another year, and enjoying the spirit of giving. But for some, Christmas can be really hard. Maybe they’ve had a tough year; perhaps the season brings back some painful memories or reminds them of someone’s who’s missing. It’s not all candy canes and presents. So local business, the Christmas Tree Truck,  is giving Canberrans a chance to spread festive cheer to those around them through their ‘Tree for a Tree’ campaign.

[pe2-image src=”http://lh6.ggpht.com/-suxCfutiNz8/VGT-zlh7dWI/AAAAAAAAMRI/zCxIb58-tzU/s144-c-o/ctt.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/TheLocalLustList#6081265559058216290″ caption=”Let the local blokes from The Christmas Tree Truck deliver a fresh, hand cut tree to your home this season.” type=”image” alt=”ctt.jpg” pe2_single_video_size=”w614″ pe2_caption=”1″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]

It’s coming to its end, but you have until Sunday to spread some Christmas cheer of your own. Simply order a locally grown, fresh and hand cut tree from Christmas Tree Truck and the boys will donate one tree each day to someone in need of a Christmas pick-me-up. It’s like having your own local Santas! Read more here.

Pay it forward

When life gets hectic, we can often forget that it’s the small things that count. Enter this gorgeous 2015 Desk Calendar ($34.95) from local company Made From Good Deeds. Each month has 3 unique deeds for you to set out and leave your positive imprint on this world.

[pe2-image src=”http://lh5.ggpht.com/-0en5w2xUFTk/VGT8otoWDzI/AAAAAAAAMPo/DR2GVmAyVBU/s144-c-o/Made%252520for%252520good%252520deeds.jpg” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/108454826374315674707/TheLocalLustList#6081263173230792498″ caption=”2015 Desk Calendar ($34.95) from local company Made From Good Deeds.” type=”image” alt=”Made for good deeds.jpg” pe2_single_video_size=”w614″ pe2_caption=”1″ pe2_img_align=”center” ]

Rotate each month as the year goes by, and as you complete each deed (in no particular order), mark out the day on the calendar. Once the year is over, look back and reminisce on the good deeds that have surely had an effect on the surroundings of your everyday life.

Get motivated

Continuing this theme of items that make you feel good AND are local (I’m feeling positively smug right now), I am loving a new jewellery range that has launched at Canberra boutique Mussen. ‘Handmade from the heart’ is the ethos behind Mim Zac jewellery- handmade, motivational jewels to inspire. We adore this crystal bracelet with an antique silver tag and at $20 it won’t break the bank. What’s not to love? Pop in and see the girls at Mussen (17 Mort St Canberra) who will show you the full range.

Satisfy your pin-up urges with these ‘Monroe’ bathers ($95) from Canberra vintage-inspired emporium, The Darling Sisters.  Featuring a sensible tie at the front, padded bra and high-waisted bottom that cinches at the waist, this little beauty will have you singing ‘Happy birthday Mr. President’ at anyone who will listen.
