Master modernist icon: Hans J Wegner turns 100

In the world of design, it would be difficult to find a furniture designer, craftsperson, architect, artist or design student who has not heard of, or been inspired by the work of legendary Danish designer, Hans J. Wegner.
According to the experts at Designcraft, even contemporary design’s heavy weights such as Jasper Morrison, Naoto Fukasawa, Tadeo Ando and Konstantin Grcic have all been cited as significant designers whose practices are based on foundations laid out by Wegner and the Danish design movement of the 1950’s.
To celebrate Hans J. Wegner’s 100th birthday, Designcraft is presenting “Master Modernist Icon”, a retrospective exhibition at the Nishi Gallery in New Acton.
“Hans J. Wegner is the epitome of a furniture designer,” says Designcraft’s Fiona McGrath.
“With an unwavering approach to craftsmanship, combined with the perfect blend of practicality and theory, Wegner still stands as an important model for the 21st Century. He is, without a doubt, the ‘Master Modernist Icon’.”
To further represent this important milestone, Designcraft also introduces “Maker+Designer”, a parallel exhibit showcasing Australian designers and makers responding to the philosophies established by Hans J. Wegner.
“Wegner transcends time and place and is a figure of influence, even within the Australian context,” says Fiona.
“Featuring the work of Jon Goulder (Creative Director of the Furniture Design Studio at the Jam Factory), Henry Wilson (Studio Wilson), Niklavs Rubenis (Lecturer, Australian National University Furniture Workshop) and Kate Stokes (Founder and Director of Coco Flip), plus work from new talent, these two exhibitions are a celebration and a homage – a tribute to the past, and to the future.”
