Five activities for Canberra adrenalin junkies
Posted on
Think Canberra is staid? Think again.
If the BMW X5 XDRIVE30D isn’t enough to get your heart racing, these five adrenalin-packed activities will take care of that.
One of the best things about living in the “Bush Capital” is its proximity to all sorts of adventurous pursuits—from DIY explorations to facilitated fun. And it’s comforting to know that when you’re out for adventure, the BMW X5’s intelligent xDrive system will adapt to even the most challenging of conditions, allowing you to relax and enjoy the drive. Going unnoticed by the driver, xDrive sensors constantly monitor vehicle behaviour and adjust to ensure the X5 remains stable and in control.
In combination with the safety, navigation and communication features of BMW ConnectedDrive, the X5 will have you on the right track. However should you find yourself in a spot of bother, the BMW ConnectedDrive team can be contacted for assistance or, if you’re not able to call yourself and there’s been a safety incident, they’ll reach out to you.
And of course when the big kids want to play the X5 is more than ready to go. With accessories to transport bikes and additional equipment easily fitted, getting out and about with the family is effortless. Here are five ways to spend an adventure-packed weekend.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
Stromlo Forest Park is one of Australia’s best mountain bike venues and is packed to the rafters with keen riders of all ages and abilities. There’s a criterium cycling circuit and more than 40km of mountain bike tracks to suit any level of rider, as well as a cross country running track and equestrian tracks for those who prefer feet and hooves to wheels!
The Playground is a great starting point for riders who want to test their abilities before heading off into the park. Consisting of a 2.5km loop featuring 12 separate skills learning areas, the trail can be ridden as a continuous loop, or as individual skills stations: bridges, see-saws, jumping areas, rhythm sections, wall rides and other unique features.
Other spots worth a ride are Sparrow Hill and East Kowen, and Majura Pines.
WHITEWATER RAFTING
Alpine River Adventures offers an epic day of whitewater fun on the Murrumbidgee River, right in the heart of the ACT. There are loads of fast-flowing rapids to get your heart pumping and amazing bush scenery as you cut through the scenic Red Rock Gorge and pass through a thundering chasm.
Tours run from July to December, suit novice to experienced rafters, and are suitable for children over 12 years.
ROCK CLIMBING AND ABSEILING
Canberra is surrounded by brilliant rock climbing country. Places like Booroomba Rocks in Namadgi National Park – a huge cliff set above the pristine Blue Gum Creek, Gibraltar Rocks and White Rocks offer exciting experiences for all levels.
If you’re keen to try it for the first time K7 Adventures take trips around the district and nearby at the Snowy Mountains and South Coast. If the adrenalin bug bites, they also offer caving expeditions.
HORSERIDING
Saddle up! Just 30 minutes from Canberra between Murrumbateman and Gundaroo, you can enjoy the thrill of horseback riding with Burnelee Excursions on Horseback. Burnelee is a fully operational grazing property of 3,500 acres where you can enjoy a range of equine experiences—from the thrill of mustering sheep and cattle to spotting the native wildlife in the vast areas of natural bushland.
Horses are available for all levels of rider, including beginners, with each ride accompanied by an experienced instructor. Regular two-hour rides are held most Saturdays, with day rides and available on request.
SKIING AND SNOWBOARD
Who says you have to head to the Snowies to experience a winter wonderand? Skiing and snowboarding fun is just 45-minutes from central Canberra at Corin Forest. Expect a ‘magic carpet’ lift, 5000m2 of gently sloping terrain and the latest snowmaking technology. There are onsite ski and snowboard rentals, a snowsports school, and a purpose-built snowplay area where you can build a snowman, ride a toboggan, and throw snowballs.
And right now the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down, with Corin Forest offering night skiing every Wednesday to Saturday, with a different theme each night.
