Strong as a Mother: free fitness for mums

DC FIT launches a free three-week fitness program which incorporates pelvic floor strengthening into addictive dance fitness classes.
Let’s talk frankly shall we? There comes a time in a woman’s life when she can no longer launch into energetic starjumps without a second thought. And it can happen at any time—from post-partum to pre- and post-menopause. And that’s when you realise that the experts who’ve been banging on about the importance of pelvic floor exercises know what they’re talking about.
It’s something that Founder and Director of local fitness studio DC Fit (and mother of two) Julie Scheer knows all about. That’s why she’s created ‘Strong as a Mother’, a free three-week program which incorporates exercises designed to support and strengthen the pelvic floor into popular dance-based classes: Bounce (mini trampoline fitness), Zumba and Barre Body.
“I was in my bathroom one night brushing my teeth when I had to sneeze, and I instantly crossed my legs, you know, just in case…and it got me thinking about how so many women are experiencing the same problem.
“I even looked it up and found that over 30% of women have to cross our legs when we sneeze! But the problem doesn’t stop there. It’s when we cough, run, jump, laugh, pick up our children…these are basic functions that mothers struggle with every day, yet we rarely ever talk about this issue, we just accept it and move on.
“I thought to myself – this is ridiculous! It’s about time we removed the stigma, brought this issue to the surface and did something about it”
Julie realised that, as the owner of a dance studio, she was in a unique position to be able to help women put themselves first and take control of their body.
“Post children, through dancing and teaching fitness classes, I have seen incredible improvement in my own strength and confidence. So, I wanted to empower and enable women to feel the same.”
Each class in the program supports those at a beginner level of fitness while slowly strengthening problem areas through the incorporation of a seven-minute pelvic floor workout that participants can learn and continue to practice at home.
“Mothers tend to put themselves and their health at the bottom of their list of priorities, but I want to help change that. So, not only have I timed these classes to suit mothers, I also wanted to ensure that these women are educated and equipped to continue the exercises long after the program is over.”
“Being active changed me for the better and I hope to instil this in other women, while helping solve something that they struggle with every day.”
