Where to find some of Canberra’s best sandwiches

Posted on

The humble sandwich is experiencing quite the comeback. Here are some of Canberra’s best.

There are few things more delicious than the perfect combination of ingredients between two slices of chewy, crusty bread. Here’s where to get a truly excellent sandwich in Canberra.

&Sando (City)

The word on everyone’s lips this past week has been &Sando – Matt Moran’s new sandwich bar in the city (you can read more about it here).

Using a selection of Under and Sonoma breads, Matt has designed a sando combo to suit most moods, from the Chix Schnitz (tomato, cabbage slaw and provolone on ciabatta) to the Tuna Fish (capers, cornichon, mayo, butterleaf, and avocado on sourdough), Spicy Deli (mortadella, spicy sopressa, tomato, pickled carrot, and provolone on sourdough), Not-So-Boring (ham, egg salad, cheddar, and rocket on a baguette). There are also gluten-free options for each.

Open 7 am – 3 pm Tuesday – Friday, 8 am – 3 pm Saturday (and open on Sundays and Mondays after Mother’s Day in May) | 148 Bunda Street, Canberra City | andsando.com.au

Sandoochie (City West)

It’s time to make a date with a dooch. Gaining something of a cult following since its opening in 2022, Sandoochie has elevated the simple sandwich with an ever-changing menu of seriously toothsome sangers that overflow with flavour.

With combinations like crumbed butternut pumpkin with seaweed mayo, slaw and pickles to masala potato, spinach pakora, pickled green chillies, and coriander, you can always expect to find a satisfying and filling lunch option. There’s a reason their slogan is “Get off your cooch, come get a dooch.”

Open Monday to Friday, 11 am – 3 pm | Shop 8 No Name Lane, Canberra City | sandoochie.com.au

Bad Bunny Eatery (City)

A KFC sando with Korean fried chicken, a fully loaded Reuben, and the mouth-watering combination of braised beef brisket, pickles and two kinds of cheese. Drooling yet?

Bad Bunny in Civic is making a name for itself for notoriously good sandwiches, and with options like these we can understand why. Add fries and thank us later.

Open Monday to Friday, 7 am – 2 pm and Saturday to Sunday, 8:30 am – 2 pm | 21 Genge Street, Canberra City | badbunnyeatery.com

Al’s Deli & Diner (City)

Seeking a lunch option that’s quick, hefty, and delicious? The new Al’s Deli & Diner is here to bring you superb sandwiches in the city.

We’re talking a menu packed full of the classics (like Meat and Pickles, Egg and Lettuce, Schnitty) as well as a Bacon & Egg Roll and a rotating selection of specials. Top off your meal with a Redbrick Coffee before getting back to your busy workday.

Open Monday to Friday, 6:30 am – 2:30 pm | 122 Alinga Street, Canberra City | alsdeli.com.au

As a favourite haunt of our Associate Editor Emma Macdonald, you know that cheese and bread will be on the menu of this little coffee bar – and it’ll be darn good.

Describing the cheese toastie as a “culinary experience of a lifetime”, they also have a rotating list of toasties with all the staples. Head along to try one for yourself.

Open Monday to Friday, 7 am – 2 pm and Saturday to Sunday, 8 am – 2 pm | 59/30 Lonsdale Street, Braddon | barriocollective.com

Intra PRVN (Campbell)

Home of the kimchi jaffle, it would be wrong not to mention Intra PRVN. It’s become iconic for a reason. Just sayin’.

Serving uncomplicated but delicious combinations between bread (including a smoked chicken pesto jaffle and chimichanga jaffle), the food might sound simple, but one bite will blow your mind.

Open Monday to Friday, 6.30 am – 2 pm and Saturday to Sunday 8 am – 2 pm | 30/12 Provan Street, Campbell | intracbr.com.au

Catbird (Parkes)

Catbird is new, but we can confirm that it’s delicious – and if you’re craving carbs filled with fresh produce, it’s worth stopping at this café.

Serving hefty sandwiches for lunch, all the bread (apart from the gluten-free options) is made in-house, and everything is flavoursome with a capital ‘F’. Need an example? The Rio Vista Torta is made with black beans (which are freshly soaked, not served out of a can), feta, tomato, avocado, red onion, radish, and cilantro crema, and it tastes as good as it sounds.

Open Monday to Sunday, 7 am – 2 pm | 44 Constitution Avenue, Parkes | catbirdcanberra.com.au

Melted Toasted Sandwich Emporium (Fyshwick)

There’s nothing like a good toastie and Melted in Fyshwick knows how to do one well.

Forget basic ham and cheese between butter and bread, here you can treat your tastebuds to combinations like mi goreng noodles, chilli jam and fried eggs, nacho beef mince with avocado, corn chips and cheese and more. You know you want to sink your teeth into one of these…

Open Monday to Friday, 7 am – 2.30 pm and Saturday, 9 am – 2 pm | U 2/3 Pirie Street, Fyshwick | meltedtoasties.com
