If your weekend doesn’t start at a bakery, are you even doing it properly?
Offering an excellent reason to get out of bed and leave the house early, these are some of Canberra’s best bakeries – the places where you pick up something flaky, grab a coffee, and go about your day with the quiet satisfaction of knowing you’ve made an excellent decision.
Under Bakery (Fyshwick and Mawson)

This local bakery has a cult following for good reason. With its recent expansion into a much larger Fyshwick space (nearly four times the size of its original Mawson shop), you now have two locations to choose from when it comes to curing your cardamom bun cravings. Are they worth driving across town for? The answer is always yes.

Just follow your nose to find Coco & Rye at the Fyshwick Markets. Tucked away but well worth seeking out, this bakery is home to an overflowing bread wall and a pastry counter filled with fruit Danishes, croissants, Italian cream-filled donuts, Portuguese tarts and more. Open from 7 am, make sure you get there early to pick up a sourdough loaf – and something flaky you didn’t plan on.

If you’re craving something refined, Flute delivers. Channelling the City of Carbs in its finest form (Paris – we’re talking about Paris), this bakery is a haven of macarons, rich gateaux in every flavour, and freshly iced brioche buns. Warning: you won’t be able to order just one – and it’s absolutely worth the drive if French-style baking is your weakness.

With a well-deserved reputation for excellent pastries and breads, the Australian Good Food Guide describes Silo as “part Brooklyn, part Parisian,” which says it all. Serving both savoury and sweet, why not have both?
