How to open a world of learning for your toddler (and meet other Canberra parents) for free!

Posted on

If you’re looking for a fun yet purposeful education experience, and have some time on a Wednesday, Canberra Girls Grammar School’s (CGGS) Little Cygnets program might be exactly what you’re looking for.

This free learn-and-play experience is designed by the Early Learning Centre (ELC) specialists at CGGS, and it’s open to all families with children ages one to three. Sessions are built around inquiry-based play, introducing young children to early literacy, numeracy and hands-on exploration.

“Often when I speak with families, they are seeking an environment for their child that is appropriate for their developing minds. They feel that traditional playgroups and day-cares sometimes don’t inspire a sense of creativity, imagination or problem-solving,” says Peter McDonald, Deputy Principal, Head of Junior School at CGGS.

“Little Cygnets is purposeful without being rigid.”

Activities span arts and crafts, reading, drawing, music, language play and open exploration – the kind of activities that keep curious minds engaged, and lay the groundwork for everything that follows. It is a great morning out for little ones and grown-ups alike. It’s also (quietly) a welcome excuse to meet other parents in the same season of life. The family you chat to over playdough may even walk through the CGGS gates with you in a year or two!

Little Cygnets is held in the Kamberri space of the ELC at CGGS, a beautiful, purpose-built environment inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. It feels exceptionally different – and fun – compared to a formal classroom.

“You may be thinking, ‘but my child learns differently’. Our Little Cygnets program is intentionally designed with every learner in mind. We know every child is different, and so is every session,” says Peter.

“Each session is age categorised, themed and designed with story-led experiences to feel genuinely exciting for toddlers – and honestly, for adults too!”

Little Cygnets sessions include:

Music and Melodies which brings ribbons, scarves and instruments to life through movement and song.

Under the Sea which transforms the space into an ocean adventure complete with puppets, bubbles and water play.

Mini Builders which hands children soft blocks, tools and loose parts to stack, lift and construct to their heart’s content.

Tiny Scientists which gets into colour mixing, fizzing reactions and floating objects. Curiosity clashes with creativity!

Where is the Green Sheep? brings the beloved picture book to life with a real search through the Kamberri space, plus playdough and small-world play.

Autumn Leaves invites children to rustle, press and explore seasonal textures through sensory trays, leaf rubbings and soft music.

Tots and Dots makes early maths genuinely fun through dot painting, circles and hands-on games.

Every session runs for 45 minutes, and while each one supports early motor skills and curiosity, the most fundamental learning outcome is simpler at its core – children have a really good time.

Watch your week light up with a little one in tow!
