Lola Berry: 20/20 vision
Posted on
She’s a bubbly nutritionist and bestselling author, but a few years ago Lola Berry was a self-described “party girl” who indulged on caramellos, lamingtons and junk food.
So what changed?
“There was a boy I liked and I wanted to look good in a bikini, so I started eating healthily,” the 29 year old laughs.
“Straight away I noticed a difference; I was sleeping better, feeling better and I had more clarity of mind. It was probably the wrong reason to start being healthy at the time, but I’m thankful for it now.”
No kidding: after studying a degree in health science, Lola now has four best-selling cookbooks under her belt, including The 20/20 diet and The Happy Cookbook.
In October the Sydney-based nutritionist will speak at the inaugural Mind Body Business weekend in Canberra, a two-day event for entrepreneurs and business people interested in a holistic approach to health, wellness and business, with local and national speakers including brain function specialist Dr Helena Popovic, Entrepreneur Creel Price and image consultant Fiona Keary.
“I will be talking about nutrition, embracing failure, self-love and the healing power of nature,” says Lola.
“I’ll be soaking up as much as I can from other people – I’m very excited about the line-up.”
Although she specialises in eating clean, Lola believes having the right mental approach is key to maintaining a healthy weight.
The foodie herself is famous for losing 20 kilos in 20 weeks – but says people have to “be realistic.”
“Everyone is always going to have those days where they fall off the wagon,” she says.
“If you eat a box of chocolate and beat yourself up for a day, you’ve wasted your day. The reality is we all fall off the wagon, not everybody talks about it, but we all do. It’s about getting back on, and then going ‘ok, what did I learn about myself today?’, says Lola.
“I used to be that person who beat herself up about it and went for four runs the next day, but there’s really no point doing that. If people ask what’s the one thing you should do that works best for weight loss, I would say meditate, practice yoga, because it gives you a clearer mind and helps you make smarter choices.”
When I ask her how she stays so positive throughout life’s occasional disappointments, Lola says it’s important to start “embracing failure.”
“I love talking about how awesome failure is, because when you fail, you get to learn all of the things about yourself and what your values are, why does it work,” she says.
“I actually love when I fail because it always teaches me something, and that’s a form of positive thinking.”
Lola’s next cookbook, yet to be titled, is due out in November.
