Jenna Douros: Fitness Star
Posted on
Today marks an incredibly exciting day for Jenna Douros, a name that’s become synonymous with health and fitness in Canberra. This inspiring local joins four other women including Cassey Miller and Lauren Hannaford from NSW, Annie Johnson from QLD and Kirri-Lee Brazendale from TAS as the five finalists in the running to become Australian Women’s Health Next Fitness Star and the 2015 face of PUMA Training.
The five ladies were deemed the crème de la crème of the entrants by an elite group of judges that included, Kylie Gillies, host of The Morning Show, celebrity personal trainer Cameron Byrnes and Rachelle Mackintosh, Acting Editor of Australian Women’s Health.
Rachelle explains, “to jump-start their careers, 180 qualified personal trainers and exercise instructors with powerful fitspo stories submitted a two-minute video of their workout style, along with what they believe it takes to be a fitness star.”
I caught up with Jenna to discuss her success in the competition, her own fitness journey, and what exactly it takes to get that incredible body.
Ashleigh: Congratulations from the team at HerCanberra! How does it feel to be selected as one of the top 5 finalists?
Jenna: Thank you very much. Knowing that I have made it this far is the most rewarding and humbling experience anyone could ask for. I have trouble explaining exactly how it makes me feel but it most certainly makes me feel proud and brings happy tears to my eyes.
What has it taken to get to this point in the competition?
I have been working away at the fitness industry for years now and trying to remain involved in as much as possible as I can. I am naturally an energetic, loud, crazy character and have an extremely wild imagination when it comes to fitness so I believe this has definitely helped my success.
What motivates and inspires you in your own health and fitness journey?
Some of the things that come to mind are my love for progression, seeing others do well and the feeling of achievement you get when reaching the finish line! I thrive off the energy from likeminded and determined people that are looking to better themselves, this is what I find motivating and contagious which always makes me want more.
What’s your favourite way to train and stay fit?
I am obsessed with HIIT [High Intensity Interval Training]/Tabata style training or anything that gets my heart rate to shoot through the roof. I equally love lifting HEAVY weights, a run up Mount Ainslie with my weight vest or an oval session with my fur baby.
What does your fitness regime involve?
At 5.15am, I jump out of bed for a 6.15am F45 session, sometimes I might throw a lunchtime gym session or outdoor boot camp in, at 6pm my husband and I hit Gold’s Gym Fyshwick for our weights session. On the weekends I slow things down to make sure I am getting quality time with my husband and pet which we often find ourselves being active.
Have you always loved fitness?
Absolutely, fitness has always been a big part of my life since a young age. I was always active taking on new sports and activities such as BMX‐ing, rollerblading, running, soccer, gymnastics, boot camps, weight training, HIIT training and now putting a twist on any exercises that I come across.
When it comes to fitness fashion and style, what are your go‐to pieces?
Most of the time you will see me in the latest and brightest active wear. If it’s new or limited edition I want it! The Puma ignite trainer because I feel like it really maximize my energy and allows me to train for longer!
I’m also loving the new graphic prints Puma have just released.
What would it mean to you to be the Next Fitness Star?
Becoming the Women’s Health Next Fitness Star would mean so many things but to break it down it would be an absolute dream come true!
I live and breathe health and fitness and have always maintained being someone that others can look up to as a role model.
Representing brands like Women’s Health and Puma whilst inspiring women around the world would mean everything to me and help make this dream become reality.
What kind of support have you had from the Canberra community?
The amount of support from my fellow Canberran’s has been overwhelming. The support has come from so many different angles such as friends and family that believed in me and encouraged me to chase this dream. The local businesses that have generously offered sponsorship and opportunity to those that voted for me and not to mention all that offered kind words via social media and stopping me in the street to wish me good luck.
We all have our fingers crossed for Jenna, and can’t wait to see the July edition of Women’s Health, where the announcement will be made of which of these gorgeous ladies will take home a one-year contract as the face of PUMA Training as well as the impressive title of Women’s Health fitness expert.
