March is Get Active Month!

With Autumn comes the perfect weather for getting out and about, and getting that body moving. And there’s just so much happening in March that we’ve decided to declare it Get Active Month! To help you get out and about, we’ve put together this list of fitness events for your calendar.
8 March – Sri Chinmoy Lake Swims
This event is Canberra’s oldest lake swim event, held since 1987. Held in the stunning Yarralumla Bay, there are 500 metre, 2.5 kilometre or 5 kilometre courses on offer that are all easy to navigate, with visible markers and safety support by the Canberra Canoe Club. Only swimmers without wetsuits are able to receive awards, so be sure to leave yours at home! There’s pancakes on offer post race for a well deserved breakfast.

9 March – Sri Chinmoy 10km and 4km Fun-Runs
What better way to start your Canberra Day then to get your sweat on in this bi-annual fun run? Join the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team at the Acton Ferry Terminal for a run by the tranquil northern shores of Lake Burley Griffin. As the name suggests, there are two different distance races to choose from and again, a post race breakfast on offer.

9 March – Canberra Day Mt Rob Roy Romp
This event is presented by The Australian Mountain Running Association and has a range of races to choose from. For runners, there’s a massive 25 kilometre run, and the 15 kilometre or 10 kilometre races are open to walkers and runners alike. It is a mountain course, so be prepared for steep hills and loose dirt, and be sure to choose appropriate runners with traction to avoid slips and falls. All courses start and finish at Calwell sports fields, and there’s treats to refuel at the end of every race.

14 March – The Bravest
Are you Brave enough? The Bravest is an obstacle course challenge designed by well-known Canberra trainer, Lee Campbell, to test mental and physical endurance. Featuring over 15 kilometres of mixed terrain, with more than 30 man made and natural obstacles, it’s a great way to test your fitness and strength. You can register as an individual or team, and even bring the kids along to try out the ‘Mini Bravest’ course.

15 March – OnTheGo Summer Series Race 4
This is the fourth event of the OnTheGo Summer Series and features a choice of events including short and long versions of the Kids Trystars race, a Novice race with shorter distances for newbies, the Australian Universities Championship Olympic, and the Konica Milonta ACT Standard Championships. The latter two events are Olympic triathlon distances: a 1500 metre swim, 40 kilometre bike ride and 10 kilometre run. If you’re new to triathlons it’s worth competing in the Novice race which is a 400 metre swim, 10 kilometre bike ride and 3 kilometre run.

16 March – Fernwood Fitness ‘Get Foxy’ Challenge
Fernwood’s biggest weight loss and body transformation event of the year kicks off on Monday 16 March in club and online.
Fernwood’s 12 Week ‘Get Foxy’ Challenge is a complete mind, body and life transformation. The challenge gives you the flexibility to compete online or combine your online program with hands on coaching and support in club with a Fernwood PT and Food Coach.
You’ll receive full meal plans, shopping lists and recipes tailored to your body type; weekly workouts to tone and sculpt; mindset sessions and a journal to track your results; plus tips and tools every day to help you make a change – for good. And to make your success even sweeter – there are prizes!

21-22 March – CBR100 Challenge
We’ve been singing the praises of this event for a while now, and for good reason! The CBR100 Challenge is a great way to check out some of the capital’s most extraordinary sights and locations along the brand new Centenary Trail. Not only are you taking part in a great team event and working on your fitness, but you’re also supporting charity!
Take a walk or run on a 25 kilometre, 50 kilometre or 100 kilometre course, exploring the sights from the centre of the city to the surrounding countryside. Don’t forget to check out tips from our nutrition guru Kate on how to prep your body for the event!

22 March – Weston Creek Half Marathon
At a whopping 21.1 kilometres, this event is a challenging way to test your fitness. The course runs along beautiful West Basin, and will see participants pounding the pavement all the way to Woden and back. Be sure to register by the 16 March to secure your spot.

27-29 March – Canberra Walking Festival
This is a non-competitive event that’s open to absolutely everybody featuring 4 events. The Festival is designed to be about fun, fitness and setting a personal challenge. The extra long times give you an opportunity to either pound the pavement, or meander amongst Canberra’s iconic buildings and nature parks. With distances from 5 kilometres to the full marathon distance (42.2 kilometres) there really is a challenge to suit everyone.

28-29 March – Operation Blackhawk Canberra Battlefield Challenge
If you’re into obstacle course racing, get excited. This massive event is offering not only a 7 kilometre ‘Battlefield Challenge’ with over 40 obstacles for adults, but there’s also ‘Australia’s most epic kids obstacle mud run, the HerCanberra Kiddyhawk!’ The Battlefield Challenge is perfect whether it’s your first obstacle race or your 50th. You can run, walk or crawl around the course, and while it’s a genuine military themed obstacle course, above all it’s a lot of fun and the perfect way to get down and dirty with your friends.
KiddyHawk is a mini version of the adult course, run on the same days as the Battlefield Challenge and is open all day so the adults have time to run the main course before or after their little tackers. It’s suitable for kids four to 13, so make sure you get the whole family along!

28-29 March – Canberra Relay for Life
More than just a relay, this event is a fun and moving overnight experience. It offers much needed funds for the Cancer Council so that they can continue to offer valued services to those in need, and research into prevention. It’s an opportunity for the Canberra community to rally in support and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients, and their carers – but also to honor and remember those loved ones lost to cancer.
While you don’t have to stay on the track all night, there’s a massive program on offer that includes entertainment, kids activities, live music and competitions – plus a free breakfast!
