A treatment for some of the hardest-working muscles we didn’t know we had

When it comes to your pelvic floor muscles, that adage “you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone*” rings absolutely true.

For beauty therapist Jaclyn Haslam, it wasn’t until she suffered a bladder prolapse after the birth of her first child that she even knew the first thing about pelvic floor and core health.

Now she wishes every young woman were taught by a women’s physio early in life how to undertake proper Kegel exercises and to treat her pelvic floor with care, particularly once she has given birth.

Pelvic floor repair: as simple as sitting down and watching a Netflix show…

Working in Sydney, Jacci saw the rise in popularity of focussed electromagnetic technology, which has been used for some time to stimulate and strengthen pelvic floor and core muscles without surgical intervention. Her own experience in using the technology to deal with her post-partum issues led her to make a career change – leaving the world of facials and spray tans behind to focus on women’s health.

Now a busy mum of three, Jacci has relocated to Canberra and set up the Effortless Clinic to help women of all ages reverse and prevent a number of common but debilitating issues. These include pelvic weakness or incontinence, new mums looking to rebuild core strength post-partum, women suffering peri-menopause or menopause symptoms or sexual dysfunction, and women looking to strengthen and define particular muscle groups.

She wants Canberra women to know there is hope for those of us who have, for myriad reasons, realised that things aren’t great down there.

For Jacci, the treatment options she was able to use with Emsella and Emsculpt were life-changing.

In a nutshell, Emsella uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate pelvic floor muscles with thousands of contractions in a 28-minute session. You sit comfortably, fully clothed, while the chair does the work, equivalent to 11,000 Kegel exercises. It’s a non-invasive way to restore pelvic strength, perfect for postpartum recovery or addressing incontinence.

In the interests of researching this story, I tried a session while watching a Netflix show and can describe it as a completely relaxing and non-invasive sit in a chair, feeling slight vibrations.

Jacci would love more women to understand the importance of pelvic floor and core strength

Emsculpt also uses HIFEM technology to trigger 20,000 muscle contractions in a 30-minute session, building strength and burning fat. You relax while the machine tones your abs, glutes, arms, or legs, with no surgery or downtime. It’s perfect for postpartum core recovery or enhancing fitness goals.

Again, I tried it, and because it is administered while you lie down on a bed, I promptly fell asleep while our stomach muscles contracted and released under a gentle buzz.

“I was so sceptical before I did my treatments. It did sound too good to be true, and I certainly didn’t have a super smooth journey through my own treatments, but that has also been really valuable in explaining how muscles can react differently for everyone,” says Jacci.

“It might not always be a linear experience, but overall all your quality of life can be so dramatically improved in such a short amount of time.”

Client satisfaction with the effectiveness of the treatment has also led to the rapid growth of Jacci’s business, which has hired two more staff to deal with demand, with more on the way. She is also scoping a possible southside location for a second clinic.

The clinic is a warm and welcoming space

“The response has been so wonderful, it’s so amazing to be able to help so many women. So many of their stories are so similar, and while it’s heartbreaking to think that women are just struggling with these issues so much, it’s so great to hear how much their lives are changed after such a short amount of sessions here.”

The sorts of feedback she and her team receive include women expressing immense gratitude for being able to play with their kids or go running again.

“Even just women messaging to tell me how many times they’ve sneezed and coughed and not leaked as well as lots of more intimate updates on their confidence and renewed pleasure in the bedroom! We love to hear how everyone is going.”

Jacci is also keen to improve the conversations around pelvic floor and core health and maintenance to help new generations have an easier time of it.

“I think it can definitely be embarrassing to talk about, and maybe people think they are the only ones having these issues. We try really hard to be open and inviting at the clinic so women can feel comfortable letting us know all their symptoms so we can help as much as possible. A lot of that is being really open about our own journey and the improvements we have had.”

Meanwhile, Jacci firmly believes every woman should learn early in life how to correctly do Kegels and how continue to work on all of their muscles.

“And I wish the six-week postpartum check was by a women’s physio who could actually explain what each woman has been through and how to be patient and kind to yourself while you heal and recover, and how to heal and what to look out for.”
Stronger pelvic floor and core muscles led to happier bodies all around, as weak cores often led to back or hip injuries.

While Jacci prides herself on results, she also takes pride in creating a clinic that is warm and inviting and where personal experiences are shared and listened to.

“We are a welcoming clinic, focused on female wellbeing. We share our own stories of struggles and healing to help clients feel comfortable.”

The clinic is elegant, with safe and fun areas for kids to play, and babies are welcome.

Jacci recommends new clients come in for a 30-minute free consultation so she can consider individual concerns, try out a few treatments and create a customised plan.

Prices range from $200-$500 per session, with bundles of treatments recommended for the best results.

*Luckily, Jacci can help you bring your pelvic floor and core muscles back to former glory.
