TEDxCanberra

TEDxCanberra’s flagship event is back this November, promising to shine a light on local talent, while tackling the issues that matter most.

Taking place on Friday 1 November at the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA), some of Canberra’s best ideas will be showcased, acting as a platform for up-and-coming changemakers and artists. With an epic line-up of speakers and performers planned, it will be the ultimate celebration of great ideas on science, technology, arts, culture, and the humanities.

Denman Village Playground Launch

Denman Prospect’s newest park is opening to the public, and you’re invited to celebrate!

SpringOUT Pride Festival

Birdsnest Canberra Pop-up

The birds are back in town! Cooma’s most famous fashion brand is making a temporary nest in Narrabundah for another Canberra pop-up.

Bringing a curated selection of brand spanking new spring/summer styles from their in-house labels, the pop-up store will be open to the public for walk-ins each day (no cost or tickets required). Art Live: Ever Present

This is a free festival-style event for young audiences aged 15 to 25

Developed in collaboration with the National Gallery Youth Council, Art Live: Ever Present brings together immersive experiences, artist-led workshops, performances and live music inspired by the exhibition Ever Present: First Peoples Art of Australia. Choose different activities throughout the evening and enjoy a night filled with creativity, culture, and connection!

Ausdance ACT 2024 Youth Dance Festival

Celebrating its 40th Anniversary with a theme of ‘What do You Dream?’, the Ausdance ACT Youth Dance Festival is back!

Featuring an exciting mix of live dance performances made by secondary schools from all over the Canberra region for three nights at the Canberra Theatre, go support the hard work and dedication of Canberra region students and witness their co-creative ability.

Drizzle Boy

It’s the first time a neurodivergent character written by a neurodivergent playwright and portrayed by an actor with lived experience has been shown on the Australian main stage.

It’s no wonder that the biting satire Drizzle Boy has been lauded as ‘groundbreaking’, ‘incredible’, and ‘thoughtful’. And after a successful 2023 run at the Queensland Theatre (which saw it named the winner of the 2022-2023 Queensland Premier’s Drama Award), the smash hit is coming to Canberra Theatre Centre. All we can say is, expect the unexpected.

Year 3000 Underage Warehouse Party

Peking Duk is coming to Canberra for two massive shows this November. The best part? Teens don’t have to miss out, with a dedicated session for 15 to 18-year-olds, as well as one just for adults.

WIC Women in ICT – 2024 Annual Dinner Debate

Talented women elevating Canberra’s ICT industry will be applauded for their career achievements at this year’s Women in ICT (WIC) Awards.

The prestigious awards will take place at the WIC Annual Dinner Debate on Friday 15 November at Hotel Realm Canberra, recognising a number of emerging and successful ICT leaders and empowering others. 2024 Craft + Design Canberra Festival

It’s the 10th year of the Craft + Design Canberra Festival, and there’s plenty to see and do. Connecting Canberra’s community with over 500 artists, craftspeople, designers and architects, the 2024 Festival advocates for design thinking, collaboration and making by hand to generate innovation and solve problems, providing hope for the future.

With a theme of Regenerate, the program of events includes exhibitions, talks, tours, activations, open studios and workshops responding to the festival theme and celebrating Canberra as a creative capital and a global city of design.

Art Show to Support Dementia Australia

As dementia continues to impact families across Australia, local woman Belle Hogg is turning her personal journey with her mother’s Alzheimer’s Dementia into a heartfelt fundraising initiative.

Holding an art show on Friday 1 November, you can expect an afternoon of creativity, connection, and community support. There will also be happy hour drinks and guests are encouraged to explore and buy a beautiful piece of art donated by some wonderful local artists. All proceeds will go towards Dementia Australia.

Come Alive Festival of Museum Theatre

The Come Alive Festival involves students from secondary schools in the ACT visiting the National Library or the National Portrait Gallery; selecting a character, object or event; and devising their own performance piece in response to the items in the national collection. Conceived by drama teacher Peter Wilkins, the festival, now in its 15th year, picks up on the rich resources in our national collections.

Club Cohen – Nightclub of the Afterlife

Come Alive Festival of Museum Theatre

Beginning at the National Museum of Australia in 2010, this marks the 15th year of The Come Alive Festival.

Running in the Shadows: Fleetwood Mac

The internationally acclaimed The Australian Fleetwood Mac Show “Running In The Shadows of Fleetwood Mac” is heading to the Zeppelin Room to pay homage to the superstar band this November.

Hiroe and Cornel Swen: Making a Creative Life

This is a  groundbreaking exhibition celebrating the lifelong creative partnership of two of Canberra’s most admired artists: Hiroe and Cornel Swen, charting their course from Kyoto to Canberra.

Running until 16 March 2025, this exhibition marks the first time both artists’ works are showcased together, offering profound insights into their individual journeys and shared contributions to Canberra’s cultural landscape. You’ll have the chance to view a selection of Hiroe and Cornel’s works, including archival images and previously unexhibited pieces. It’s a unique glimpse into their creative connection!

Megalo Wayzgoose

Megalo Print Studio’s Megalo Wayzgoose exhibition will bring together over 100 artworks by more than 50 contemporary printmakers from across ACT, NSW, SA, Victoria and Tasmania.

If you’ve never heard of a wayzgoose before, it’s an annual printmakers’ tradition dating back to the mid-1700s when a printing house would have an event to celebrate the printers’ work. This exhibition features artists from across Australia who are working with print in its multiplicitous forms:

Pattern Recognition

Pattern Recognition celebrates female and non-binary artists from the ACT region who use abstraction and design principles to explore colour perception and spatial relationships, highlighting the ways artists approach colour, geometry, and form.

While the artists in the exhibition explore similar visual terrain, embracing non-objective abstraction, repetition and pattern, their underlying conceptual investigations and influences vary and include post-colonial and feminist frameworks, climate activism, architecture, memory, extended pictorial space, mindfulness, and sensory engagement with the materials. The exhibition investigates regeneration, exploring the influence of traditional craft disciplines on contemporary art practice.

There is a crack in everything… that’s how the light gets in

Inspired by the many poems celebrating imperfection, five local potters have combined their creative forces to present this beautiful exhibition.

A study of the beauty, or light, that lies within the imperfections of the physical form, the five artists explore their different perspectives, and the inconsistencies and flaws that are inherent in the practice of the hand made and the beauty that emerges. Kulata Tjuta: Tirkilpa

Kulata Tjuta is an ongoing cultural maintenance project that shares the skills of carving and making the punu kulata (wooden spear) across generations.

Starting as a project involving a small group of men in Amata, it grew to include over 100 Aṉangu men across the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. As the largest and most significant installation of the culturally important and visually spectacular Kulata Tjuta (Many Spears) Project, you’ll see large-scale, multi-disciplinary installations which incorporate film, sound, live performance and other artistic collaborations.

20 Years of Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year

For 20 years, the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition has provided a platform for emerging and established photographers to capture the most remarkable flora, fauna, and landscapes of Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea.

This year, National Archives of Australia is showcasing 20 Years of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year with winning entries from each year of the competition. A Feeling for Place

Hosted at Civic Library, A Feeling for Place shows places and scenes in Canberra, Sydney and India.

Ranging from picnic areas, community centres, cultural activities at home or at festivals in a park, to an image of a café managed by a Burmese refugee, behind the images presented in the exhibition lie both an emotional and narrative content arising from the artist’s family and cultural background.

Carol Jerrems: Portraits

This is a major exhibition of one of Australia’s most influential photographers.

Island Hopping: A Solo Show by Jeffrey Sarmiento

Known for his creative practice exploring cultural identity and the graphic image in glass, Jeffrey Sarmiento embeds layers of information in his intricately constructed objects, sculptures and public commissions.

An expert in kiln formed and digital fabricated glass, he uses cutting and pasting of printed glass lenticular imagery and within the transparent medium, allowing imagery to swim within the pieces. Head along to the Canberra Glassworks to see his work, which helps him to expose complex narratives and create new ways of seeing.

Mythica Ignota: Solo Exhibition by Elliat Rich

Showcasing new work developed during Elliat Rich’s residency at Canberra Glassworks throughout 2024, Mythica Ignota uses mythology as a framework to nest scientific observation and more-than-human orientated values with artefact and narrative.

Curated by Aimee Frodsham, in this exhibition Alice Springs designer Elliat Rich taps into ancient and future ways of seeing the world.

This free community event will be the place to check out and experience what the Summer of Tennis has in store.

The Bloody Long Walk

This is a 35km challenge from Red Hill to Reconciliation Park, raising money to find cures for mitochondrial disease (mito).

Mito is a debilitating and potentially fatal genetic disorder that impairs the body’s ability to convert food into the energy needed to power muscles and major organs. One Australian child born each week suffers a severe or life-threatening form of mito making it the second most commonly diagnosed serious genetic disease after cystic fibrosis. Walk, jog or run and enjoy spectacular scenery whilst raising vital funds.

Plant Propagation Workshop

Jane, Meet Gather Collect’s resident plant person, will lead a two-hour workshop on indoor plant propagation.

You’ll learn about propagating in water and in soil and how to transition your babies into larger pots. Everyone will take home a collection of different cuttings to grow on, plus you will get to take home your very own handmade propagation station! Bring your own plants that you wish to propagate.

William Dalrymple: How Ancient India Transformed the World
