All aboard! Journey back in time this January on a vintage train ride

Posted on

Anyone fancy a vintage train ride meandering through lush countryside and beautiful scenery, all while being only 38 kilometres away from Canberra?

After a sellout success last summer, locals can once again hop aboard the Molonglo Valley Explorer, thanks to a special collaboration between the Canberra Railway Museum and Lachlan Valley Railway.

Teaming up once again to operate heritage train rides between Canberra and Bungendore, for three weekends you can sit back and bask in the stunning landscape of the Southern Tablelands, winding through the Molonglo Gorge before emerging onto the wide rolling grassland around Bungendore.

Once the train arrives in Bungendore, passengers can enjoy a short stop to admire the 1884 station building, before the train returns to Canberra!

The train, railmotor 631/731 (affectionately known as Neville and Joan), dates back to 1961, where it spent most of its life working suburban trains around Sydney and Newcastle, followed by a brief stint as a track inspection vehicle.

Canberrans may be familiar with Neville and Joan, as it underwent restoration on the Canberra Railway Museum site, to be able to carry passengers again.

If you’re keen to board, make sure you prepare in advance – there are limited spots available.

The train will be running three trips per day on Saturday 11, Sunday 12, Saturday 18, Sunday 19, Saturday 25, Sunday 26 and Monday 27 January.

As for the cost? It’s $40 for adults, $30 for concessions, and $20 for children.

If you’re looking for something different to do on the weekends, choo-choose the Bungendore vintage train ride!

Tickets can be booked here.
