Are you Googfest’s next star?

Posted on

Are you a musician or in a band?

The hunt is on for talented local musicians to perform at Googfest 2018.

For the first time, local musicians and bands can nominate for the opportunity to perform live before an audience of more than 10,000 people, on Saturday 3 February 2018.

While the headline act for next year’s show is still under wraps, organisers are searching for a new generation of stars to join the lineup. Three or four acts will be selected and each one will have 30 to 45 minutes to woo the audience with their best tracks.

Organised by Peet and Mirvac, the development companies behind the new Googong township, Googfest has grown to become one of the biggest live music festivals in the ACT region. In 2017, the free event drew an all-ages crowd of 12,000 people.

Googong Project Director Malcolm Leslie said the annual gig, now heading into its fourth year, was an important showcase for local talent.

“Googonians love to get together as a community so the idea of a relaxed summer concert, and the chance to discover some fresh and exciting local performers, has been hugely popular,” he said.

“Canberra has a thriving music scene but young performers rarely get to play for a crowd of this size, or to experience everything that goes into a big outdoor production, like professional lighting and sound.

“This year we are giving everyone the chance to put up their hand to be part of Googfest – whether they are solo performers or bigger bands.”

Googfest has an impressive record of shining the spotlight on emerging talent. Queensland deva Dami Im took the crowd by storm at the first Googfest, just before she won international acclaim at Eurovision, and was followed by Indie Pop idols SAFIA in 2016.

Dance music legends Sneaky Sound System were the main course in a feast of local music earlier this year that also featured Slow Turismo, Young Monks, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers and singer-songwriter Lucy Sugerman. Lucy was only 15 years-old when she captivated the Googfest audience – going on to make the finals of Australia’s hit television contest The Voice.

“Googfest was such a wonderful experience and show to play,” says Lucy. “I think it is a wonderful opportunity for local talent because you get to play on a magnificent stage for a crowd of thousands, you get to be a part of and learn about the process of putting a big festival on, it gives you a huge platform to share your passion and your music and leads to many other opportunities!”

“I honestly loved Googfest and the entire experience – from my first experience of cordless mics to getting to play to 10,000 people, to enjoying the free food backstage. I can’t thank Googfest enough for setting up 2017 to be one of the biggest years of my life and for giving me a memory I will never forget.”
