MONOPOLY has announced a Canberra edition…so what should be on there?

Canberra is home to some iconic institutions. The National Gallery of Australia. The National Portrait Gallery. Questacon.
But let’s be honest—Canberrans all have their own version of ‘iconic’ when it comes to our fair city. So when we read that Hasbro has (finally!) announced Canberra will be getting its own edition of MONOPOLY, we had some thoughts.
Of course, there are some obvious inclusions. Yarralumla Kebabs needs to be on there (real name Yarralumla Turkish Halal Pide House), as does Downstairs Mooseheads, Belconnen’s iconic Owl statue and Lonsdale Street’s Rainbow Roundabout.
The light rail (real name Canberra Metro), Big Splash and Adam & Eve, Fyshwick’s iconic OG adult store, are also popular suggestions (in our office at least) but the real pickle is: what to do with Queanbeyan…?
Instead of railway stations, we could have the four traffic jams you don’t want to get caught in on a Canberra morning (Barry Drive, Kings Avenue Bridge, Northbourne Avenue and Parkes Way) and purchasable amenities could include Icon Water (proud owners of the Free The Poo campaign) and one of our many a hot air balloon companies.
Naturally, the Luxury Tax will be to give up your brand-new Kathmandu Puffer Jacket (RRP $399) and we think a nice touch could be to weave a public service lanyard into the logo somehow. Just a thought.
Don’t believe it’s happening? No, really—Winning Moves, the company creating the Canberra MONOPOLY Board under license from Hasbro, says the game could be here as early as March 2024.
“We’ve wanted to create a Canberra MONOPOLY edition for some time and are thrilled to finally be able to kick this special project off,” says Dale Hackett, a representative from Winning Moves.
“It’s a place known for its heritage landmarks, but over the year’s [sic] has also developed a dynamic cultural scene we are keen to showcase. Whether you’re wanting to spotlight the Australian War Museum, Parliament House, or local favourite Edgar’s Inn, we’re open to it all!”
