Looking for a new fur-ever friend? This International Day of Happiness you can help a greyhound

Posted on

Did you know that Saturday 22 March is the International Day of Happiness? Not sure how to embrace that day? Well, look no further.

Greyhounds As Pets is hosting an adoption day, where you can bring happiness and a forever home to these furry friends!

This not-for-profit initiative is coordinated by Greyhound Racing NSW, with the focus on re-homing ex-racing Greyhounds. Hosting their adoption day at the Australian National University (ANU) on the Willow Oval, on Saturday 22 March between 9 am and 12 pm; there will be over 30 greyhounds looking for a new home.

But why adopt a greyhound?

Out of all dogs, they are one of the most versatile for every type of lifestyle. They rarely bark and have a calm and gentle demeanour, making them perfect for apartment owners, . They also have minimal shedding and grooming requirements and are affectionate and loving – perfect for families with both big and small kids! They are also great for people looking for more of an active lifestyle because they need daily walks but also work well for those with a busy lifestyles as these requirements are not as high as other dogs.

But it’s not just young pups on the hunt for a new home, there will be many seniors who will be waiting for you to arrive.

Many people don’t give senior dogs (aged seven and over) a look, as they don’t see the many benefits an older dog can bring, but there’s plenty to consider. Older dogs still form strong bonds with their owners, and they will love you more for adopting them! Plus, they have outgrown their puppy behaviours, walk on a leash well, know the basic obedience commands, have developed basic social skills as many of them have lived in homes before, their personality is developed so you will know if they are the right for for you, and older dogs can still learn new tricks. So make sure to consider these mature pups as they’ll bring just as much love and happiness to your life as any other.

What can you expect on the adoption day? Not only will you have the chance to see and meet all the greyhounds up for adoption, you’ll also have the chance to chat with experts, bring along your own dog, and learn more about greyhounds in general. You’ll also have the chance to talk to previous adoptees and ask any burning questions you may have!

There will also be a special adoption fee run on the day, where you can re-home these fur babies for $150 (normally $250), and seniors for $75 (normally $150).

To see all greyhounds available for adoption, visit the dogalouge on the website here, and if you’re interested in applying to adopt, make sure you fill out the form here as soon as possible to make sure you don’t miss out.
