Tastes of Two Regions 2017
Tastes of Two Regions brings the wine and food of two magnificent regions to Canberra.
King Valley and Rutherglen, located side by side in North East Victoria, are known for innovative wine styles and excellent produce. King Valley Prosecco Road sidles up alongside Rutherglen’s boutique Muscat and Durif cellars, in a setting of rolling hills, mountain ranges, vines, open skies and historic townships.

Flying High in the Googong Sky
Flying High in the Googong Sky – a free day of kites and fun!
Googong’s utterly uplifting kite festival is back with a host of new flying friends for you and your kids to meet, including a giant whale shark, dragons, bunny rabbits, a stingray, astronauts and a flying pig! So bring a kite and join in the fun. There will be a sausage sizzle – or bring your own picnic – while our DJ provides the inflight entertainment.

Women in Media Networking Night
There’s a cyber security threat no one is thinking about – but they should be. We’re talking internet trolling and the real-life trauma it can inflict.
Research by UNSW academic Dr Emma Jane indicates targets of online misogyny endure “many layers of suffering.” Some of these include: victims contemplating, threatening, or attempting suicide, career derailment, financial losses, long-term psychological impacts, and real-life bodily harm.
A recent United Nations report estimated that 73 percent of women have endured cyber violence and that women are 27 times more likely as men to be harassed online. With all this knowledge at hand, why isn’t the community urgently addressing this issue?
Here we are in 2017, and, anecdotally, it appears not much has changed to stop cyberhate. If anything, it’s getting worse. What can we do about it?

Questacon Presents Dava Sobel
Join Dava Sobel in conversation with Professor Brian Schmidt in the prelude event to the 2017 Canberra Writers Festival, Monday 7 August.
The known universe would be much smaller were it not for a group of remarkable female “human computers” who worked at Harvard College Observatory in the 19th century to interpret the astronomical observations of their male counterparts. In this Special Prelude Event to the 2017 Canberra Writers Festival, Dava Sobel will tell the story of this amazing group of women who changed the history of astronomy, making extraordinary discoveries that attracted worldwide acclaim.
Dava’s enthralling history The Glass Universe tells of women like Williamina Fleming, a Scottish woman originally hired as a maid who went on to identify ten novae and more than three hundred variable stars and Annie Jump Cannon, who designed a stellar classification system that was adopted by astronomers the world over and is still in use.

Chasing Chet
Music from Baker’s Trumpet. The music of Chet Baker has always fascinated audiences. At the heart of his playing there was a fragile lyricism that was somehow sophisticated, yet raw and untrained. His performances often teetered on a knife edge and coupled with his unpredictable personal life it is easy to understand this fascination.
Now Canberra audiences have the chance to experience a taste of this music as three of the cities’ finest musicians combine to examine the music of his later career. In the format of a drum-less trio, a combination often used by Baker, guitarist Lachlan Coventry, double bassist James Luke and trumpeter Ben Marston re-imagine some of the great standards of the twentieth century.
With references to Doug Raney, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and obviously Baker himself, the trio provide a clear vision of lyrical melodies, rich harmonic colourings and occasional virtuosic punctuation. Timeless music treated in a respectful yet contemporary way

Palliative Care ACT Life Stories Breakfast
Palliative Care ACT is hosting a breakfast on Wednesday 9 August 2017. The event is a fundraiser to relaunch their Life Stories Program.
The keynote speaker will be Jean Kittson, Australian performer, writer and comedian. Jean is also a women’s health advocate and presents a lighter tone on the issue of death and dying and wants people to start the talk before it’s too late.
They’re also fortunate to have as their MC for the morning Clyde Rathbone, former Wallabies and Brumbies player and co-founder of Karma.

Arabian Nights at Polit
A range of cultures, dance styles and feminine body types, including an 8-month pregnant belly will be celebrated through a belly dance showcase at Arabian Nights at Polit (produced by #JazidaProductions) in Manuka on 11 August.
Performance art enthusiasts, belly dance lovers and people looking for a fun and different way to spend a Friday evening in Canberra have a great solution available! The show takes place every three months at Polit Bar in Manuka, which is a small cocktail lounge with no formal stage. It’s a very intimate venue, where dancers interact with the crowd and the audience has an opportunity to see Australian talent up close and personal!
The show will feature Jacqui Princi, who the founder of Bedazzled Bellydance School and will be dancing her 8-month pregnant belly. It will also feature Fifi Noir, a prestigious tribal fusion belly dancer who is coming from Queensland to perform at the event. Fifi will be treating the audience to her full figured technical dancing as well as fire manipulation skills. They will share the stage with the local professional Belly Up Bellydance troupe.
While Fifi Noir is in town, #JazidaProductions is facilitating workshops so she can share their skills within the Canberra community. Fifi is running an Expressions Lab workshop focusing on dance presentation as well as a Deco Darling workshop focusing on fusion belly dance technique on 27 August.

Making Do: Utility Wear with Annie Wu
A Fix and Make workshop with Annie Wu of Articles of Clothing. During World War II, the British Government introduced the Utility Scheme CC41. The scheme encouraged clothing manufacturers throughout the UK to use cloth supplied by the government. The style of the items was regulated. Straight cuts and slim silhouettes with no embellishments and unnecessary pleats maximised the number of items that could be cut from the cloth and minimized waste by reducing offcuts. While these austerity measures created some hostility, they saved millions of metres of fabric and clothed thousands of people in a time of extreme scarcity.
Leaping from the CC41 scheme, Annie Wu will teach you how to create unconventional patterns for functional garments that reduce waste. You’ll make a template for a contemporary utilitarian uniform (that can be worn every day) and cut the pattern from supplied cloth. Pieces can then be assembled at home or be handed over to Peter Kongmalavong at the end of the workshop for completion. Peter will be able to provide you with a quote to sew and return your new garments. This workshops encourages us to think about how we might dress ourselves differently.
Hotel Hotel’s ‘Making Do’ Fix and Make series looks at alternative ways of making and repairing things and is designed to encourage us to consider the objects and raw materials that already surround us in new ways.

Music from Baker’s Trumpet. The music of Chet Baker has always fascinated audiences. At the heart of his playing there was a fragile lyricism that was somehow sophisticated, yet raw and untrained. His performances often teetered on a knife edge and coupled with his unpredictable personal life it is easy to understand this fascination.
Now Canberra audiences have the chance to experience a taste of this music as three of the cities’ finest musicians combine to examine the music of his later career. In the format of a drum-less trio, a combination often used by Baker, guitarist Lachlan Coventry, double bassist James Luke and trumpeter Ben Marston re-imagine some of the great standards of the twentieth century.
With references to Doug Raney, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and obviously Baker himself, the trio provide a clear vision of lyrical melodies, rich harmonic colourings and occasional virtuosic punctuation. Timeless music treated in a respectful yet contemporary way

Arabian Nights at Polit
A range of cultures, dance styles and feminine body types, including an 8-month pregnant belly will be celebrated through a belly dance showcase at Arabian Nights at Polit (produced by #JazidaProductions) in Manuka on 11 August.
Performance art enthusiasts, belly dance lovers and people looking for a fun and different way to spend a Friday evening in Canberra have a great solution available! The show takes place every three months at Polit Bar in Manuka, which is a small cocktail lounge with no formal stage. It’s a very intimate venue, where dancers interact with the crowd and the audience has an opportunity to see Australian talent up close and personal!
The show will feature Jacqui Princi, who the founder of Bedazzled Bellydance School and will be dancing her 8-month pregnant belly. It will also feature Fifi Noir, a prestigious tribal fusion belly dancer who is coming from Queensland to perform at the event. Fifi will be treating the audience to her full figured technical dancing as well as fire manipulation skills. They will share the stage with the local professional Belly Up Bellydance troupe.
While Fifi Noir is in town, #JazidaProductions is facilitating workshops so she can share their skills within the Canberra community. Fifi is running an Expressions Lab workshop focusing on dance presentation as well as a Deco Darling workshop focusing on fusion belly dance technique on 27 August.

BRENDAN KELLER – TUBERG TRIO
Brendan Keller-Tuberg is a young emerging bassist and composer. He has established himself as a regular performer in the region, having played with Miroslav Bukovsky, John Mackey and Paul Grabowsky. Most recently, he has returned from the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana, having studied under jazz heavyweights such as Walter Smith III and John Clayton.
Though he has strived for versatility in all styles of music-making, Brendan has always had a passion for modern jazz composition. Influenced by cutting-edge piano trios such as The Bad Plus and the Vijay Iyer Trio, he honed his compositional abilities and aesthetic through 2015 and 2016, culminating in the recording of his first full-length album in December 2016. Recorded at the School of Music by Louis Montgomery, and featuring recent ANU alumni Tate Sheridan and Daniel Faber, the album represents Brendan’s first effort at presenting the music he’s always dreamed of making – historically informed and conceptually sophisticated, yet personal and emotionally intimate.

There’s a cyber security threat no one is thinking about – but they should be. We’re talking internet trolling and the real-life trauma it can inflict.
Research by UNSW academic Dr Emma Jane indicates targets of online misogyny endure “many layers of suffering.” Some of these include: victims contemplating, threatening, or attempting suicide, career derailment, financial losses, long-term psychological impacts, and real-life bodily harm.
A recent United Nations report estimated that 73 percent of women have endured cyber violence and that women are 27 times more likely as men to be harassed online. With all this knowledge at hand, why isn’t the community urgently addressing this issue?
Here we are in 2017, and, anecdotally, it appears not much has changed to stop cyberhate. If anything, it’s getting worse. What can we do about it?

Making Do: Utility Wear with Annie Wu
A Fix and Make workshop with Annie Wu of Articles of Clothing. During World War II, the British Government introduced the Utility Scheme CC41. The scheme encouraged clothing manufacturers throughout the UK to use cloth supplied by the government. The style of the items was regulated. Straight cuts and slim silhouettes with no embellishments and unnecessary pleats maximised the number of items that could be cut from the cloth and minimized waste by reducing offcuts. While these austerity measures created some hostility, they saved millions of metres of fabric and clothed thousands of people in a time of extreme scarcity.
Leaping from the CC41 scheme, Annie Wu will teach you how to create unconventional patterns for functional garments that reduce waste. You’ll make a template for a contemporary utilitarian uniform (that can be worn every day) and cut the pattern from supplied cloth. Pieces can then be assembled at home or be handed over to Peter Kongmalavong at the end of the workshop for completion. Peter will be able to provide you with a quote to sew and return your new garments. This workshops encourages us to think about how we might dress ourselves differently.
Hotel Hotel’s ‘Making Do’ Fix and Make series looks at alternative ways of making and repairing things and is designed to encourage us to consider the objects and raw materials that already surround us in new ways.

Dava’s enthralling history The Glass Universe tells of women like Williamina Fleming, a Scottish woman originally hired as a maid who went on to identify ten novae and more than three hundred variable stars and Annie Jump Cannon, who designed a stellar classification system that was adopted by astronomers the world over and is still in use.

WINS CREEK MEADERY – THE NATURAL HIVE WORKSHOP
The social structure of honeybees is an inspiration. How do thousands of bees, working in the dark, organise themselves to build the perfect honeycomb structure and then to go out and collect the honey and pollen to fill it? How do they accomplish such amazing feats?
The honeycomb consists of a large number of hexagonal cells, expertly constructed from beeswax and propolis. The spacing, curve and shape of the combs is also precisely defined. In this course, they will explain what is known about the complex social behaviour of bees that has evolved over millions of years. They’ll look at the underlying division of labour, and observe through the viewing windows of an indoor cathedral hive, the hive itself, in its various stages of construction.

The keynote speaker will be Jean Kittson, Australian performer, writer and comedian. Jean is also a women’s health advocate and presents a lighter tone on the issue of death and dying and wants people to start the talk before it’s too late.
They’re also fortunate to have as their MC for the morning Clyde Rathbone, former Wallabies and Brumbies player and co-founder of Karma.

Melodrama in Meiji Japan
Step into the tumultuous world of Meiji Japan (1868–1912), through a selection of stunning Japanese woodblock illustrations. Used to illustrate Japanese novels, these beautiful images, known as kuchi-e (literally, ‘mouth/opening picture’), accompany stories filled with drama, tragedy and intrigue, reflecting the uncertainty of the times.
Curated by Dr. Gary Hickey, the exhibition draws upon a substantial collection of kuchi-e amassed by University of NSW Emeritus Professor Richard Clough (1921-2014) and donated to the Library. This collection, along with other works acquired, forms one of the most significant collections of this genre in the world and the largest focused collection of Japanese art in Australia. The exhibition features over twenty artists and a range of subjects, illustrating a fascinating history of a genre profiled for the first time in a major exhibition.

AVITAL SHEFFER – WANDERLUST
Language, art, history and spirituality emerge within the contemporary ceramic forms of Avital Sheffer in Wanderlust. The objects are artefacts of her complex cultural heritage, with designs on the surface of her vessels coming from a library of ancient Semitic, Arabic and Hellenic texts and imagery.
Avital grew up in Israel and after migrating to Australia in 1990, she completed a diploma in ceramics in 2003. Her work has been widely collected and is represented in many collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Powerhouse Museum, Ateliers d’Art de France, Manly Art Gallery and Museum and regional galleries across Australia.

Marsden Art Group this year visits the theme ‘Evolve’, which reflects a process of change whether in relation to humans, animals, the planet, weather, plants, thought or process.
In their explorations of Evolve, MAG’s emerging and established artists use a diversity of mediums and interpretations. The theme has provided opportunities for the artists to develop thoughts and processes, unfold stories, advance ideas and unravel histories.
Marsden Art Group, established in 2003 by Barbara Van Der Linden, continues to evolve while maintaining its strength of inclusiveness, mentorship, the provision of opportunities that may not be available when working on one’s own and the promotion of education in the business of art.

Defying Empire: 3rd National Indigenous Art Triennial
Defying Empire: 3rd National Indigenous Art Triennial at the National Gallery of Australia brings the works of 30 contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from across the country into the national spotlight.
This exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of 1967 Referendum that recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as Australians for the first time. It explores the ongoing resilience of Australia’s Indigenous people since first contact, through to the historical fight for recognition and ongoing activism in the present day.
Be moved by powerful art that touches on the issues of identity, racism, displacement, country, nuclear testing, sovereignty and the stolen generations through many media: painting on canvas and bark, weaving and sculpture, new media, prints, photography, metalwork and glasswork.
This groundbreaking show is the largest survey yet at the NGA and it highlights the continued excellence and diversity of Indigenous practice today.

Worry will vanish revelation
‘Worry will vanish revelation‘ is a large-scale immersive video installation by Swiss contemporary artist, Pipilotti Rist on show at the National Gallery of Australia until 20 August.
An intertwining psychedelic microcosm of flesh and nature is projected on a 16-metre surround screen inside a dedicated space that engulfs the viewer in a meditative experience.
Accept the invitation to explore the sensation of being at one with the universe and every living organism in it. Remove your shoes and step inside an alternative space, recline on a soft cushion, give yourself permission to stop and stretch out. Allow your mind a reprieve from the day’s schedule, release your worry. Slow your breathing by relaxing each body part, starting with the soles of your feet right up to the top of your head. Absorb your new surrounds through your eyes and ears and try to sense your environment through every pore of your skin. Listen to the soundscape of a rhythmic, whirring pulse.

Rodel Tapaya: New art from the Phillipines
Exciting new talent Rodel Tapaya draws inspiration from Filipino folklore and contemporary events in an exhibition of recent mural-sized painting, sculptural installation and works on paper on exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia until 20 August.
By drawing inspiration from pre-colonial mythology and Filipino folkloric tradition, Tapaya meticulously pieces together numerous pictorial fragments, fusing the otherworldly with the real, in a visual grappling with contemporary politics, social and environmental issues.

Kirstie Rea, The Land: A 20 Year Survey
Kirstie Rea established an independent studio in Canberra in 1987, following her graduation from the Glass program at the (then) Canberra School of Art. This exhibition documents her achievements over the past two decades as one of Australia’s leading contemporary glass artists. Much of the artist’s distinctive imagery has its genesis in rural experience. Her work often explores the growing separation between our increasingly urbanised lives and her perception of the natural environment.

The National Photographic Portrait Prize 2017
See forty-nine of the year’s best photographic portraits at the 2017 National Photographic Portrait Prize. An annual prize open to both aspiring and professional photographers, the NPPP celebrates contemporary photographic portraiture from across the country, with the winner awarded $25,000.
Now in its tenth year, the prize continues to present surprising perspectives on contemporary photographic portraiture, with the images remaining an evolving kaleidoscope of the nation’s preoccupations and identity.

Onetoeight: Australia’s First Prime Ministers
Visually arresting, humorous and thoughtful, Canberra-based artist Alison Alder reinterprets and reinvigorates portraits of the first eight prime ministers in Onetoeight: Australia’s First Prime Ministers, a contemporary art exhibition.
See intense patterned wallpaper honouring the prime minister’s wives and a Term-O-Meter animation tracking the changing political hues of individuals and governments. Through the portraits Alder gives us a sense of Australia’s history that is lively, dynamic and parallels the present day.

PEACE, LOVE AND WAR: THE DENMANS, EMPIRE AND AUSTRALIA, 1910-1917
Lord Thomas Denman was Australia’s fifth Governor-General. He and his wife, the irrepressible Lady Gertrude Denman, resided in Australia from July 1911 to May 1914. This exhibition examines the political, cultural and Imperial interests of this imposing power couple – and those they influenced – in the context of rapidly evolving social values, against a backdrop of a Europe on the brink of World War.

MYSTERIOUS EYES: ARTHUR BOYD PORTRAITS FROM 1945
A young man whose soft features betrayed the intensity of his own self-image, Arthur Boyd portrayed others with equally concentrated emotion. In this focus exhibition, Boyd’s self-portrait at age twenty-five is joined by his portraits of those around him. Through his eyes they are a reflection of the artist’s own state of mind.

ART IS A WEAPON
Art is a Weapon explores how the Eureka story, legend and iconography have been used by groups and causes of all political flavours to spread their message. Alongside the portfolio of works, other objects and artworks using the Southern Cross motif show how the idea of Eureka has been adopted by groups as diverse as young communists and motorcycle clubs.

MAGNA CARTA – AN AUSTRALIAN STORY
This exhibition celebrates the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, one of the most famous and significant documents for democracy and human rights around the world. First written in 1215, it set down rules limiting the power of the monarchy and safeguarding basic human rights and freedoms. This exhibition explores the history and relevance of Magna Carta from an Australian perspective.
