DESIGN Canberra Festival 2018
DESIGN Canberra is an annual festival which celebrates and promotes Canberra as a global city of design.
Design is in Canberra’s DNA. From the time of Walter and Marion Griffin’s visionary design a century ago, to iconic experimental modernist architecture of the 1950s and 60s, through to contemporary and sustainable design developments today, Canberra has always been a living design laboratory.
Throughout November 2018, over 100 events, exhibitions, talks, tours, markets, artist studios and open homes will be showcased as DESIGN Canberra. The festival is for all interests and ages and most events are free. Last year a record 94,500 people attended the festival.
Happening 5-25 November across various locations.
See the website for more information.
Presented by Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre.

Pure and simple, the circle embodies infinite possibilities. When we support designers to live, work and make in Canberra, we create a vibrant and creative community for everyone to enjoy.
Happening Saturday 10 November from 8 pm on Level One, Monaro Mall (access from Petrie Plaza).

BREAKING THROUGH: 75 YEARS OF WOMEN IN PARLIAMENT
Why did it take so long for women to get elected? And once they were there, what was their experience within the parliament?
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first women elected to Australian Federal Parliament, Breaking Through exhibition at the Museum of Australian Democracy explores the journeys of 11 trailblazers who were the first to hold particular parliamentary positions.
These are stories of resilience, perseverance and ground-breaking achievements.
From 1943 when Dorothy Tangney and Enid Lyons were the first women elected to parliament through to today where woman have held the highest positions in all areas of parliament, including Prime Minister.
Breaking Through exhibition, recognises the significant contribution these women made in Australia’s democracy. Look back on their lives, uncover their motivations and what they view as their greatest achievements.
Told through never before seen portraits, each a unique representation by a young artist, and powerful stories of change-makers breaking through, this exhibition will inspire visitors to think about the role of women in parliament, what it took to get there and whether we’ve come far enough.
Showing until 28 August 2019 from 9 am – 5 pm daily at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House.

American Masters
Drawn exclusively from the National Gallery of Australia’s (NGA) outstanding collection of American art, American Masters celebrates that nation’s artists from the 1940s to the 1980s. When the NGA acquired Jackson Pollock’s Blue poles in 1973, at the time the most expensive American painting ever sold, our emerging collection hit the global headlines. This exhibition tells the story of the formation of our incredible American collection and includes many major works not seen together for a long time.
From Abstract Expressionism, Colour Field, Pop, Neo-Dada and Photo-Realism, to Conceptual, Land and Performance Art, American Masters examines how a generation of young Americans, inspired by European émigrés, challenged local traditions and reinvented modern art. The sensational international impact of the era’s major artists is captured in masterpieces by Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Chuck Close, Donald Judd, Eva Hesse and Louise Bourgeois.
Highlights include paintings and works on paper by the New York School; Sol LeWitt’s huge Wall drawing No. 380 a-d 1982, specially re-made for this exhibition; and a selection of spectacular light works by Dan Flavin, Bruce Nauman, Keith Sonnier and James Turrell.

Exclusion by David Atfield
From David Atfield, award-winning creator of ‘Scandalous Boy’, comes an explosive new play, Exclusion, that looks at the post marriage equality political world and questions just how welcome LGBTIQ people really are in the corridors of power.
Canberra 2018. As a debate rages over a proposed education program to teach children about sexuality, two male federal ministers contend to become Prime Minister. But they both have secret lives that threaten to destroy their careers. When a handsome young staffer enters the scene, their worlds descend into a whirlpool of hypocrisy, blackmail, deception and sexual intrigue.
‘Exclusion’ is a sexy, funny, moving and wildly sensual play combining the complexities of human sexuality with ambitions for power. We see politicians stripped naked, literally and spiritually, as the characters betray, expose and manipulate each other, identities tumble, marriages fall and alliances break. The complex intersection of the personal and the political, woven into a universal story about the personal compromises we all make in the pursuit of our careers.
Warning: Contains nudity, sexual and adult themes, coarse language and drug use. Recommended for ages 16+.
Happening from Saturday 10 November til Saturday 17 November at The Street Theatre, Childers St from 8 – 9pm. Tickets from $30.
More information and tickets available at The Canberra Theatre.

On her forthcoming release LIFE, in collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Parks, Sessoms has displayed an adventurous arranging sensibility and a refreshing disregard for genre boundaries. Her expressive, sophisticated sound draws on jazz, R&B and pop in fresh and moving ways, whether she’s presenting her own material, reinterpreting “Strange Fruit” for our own troubled times, or reshaping classic pop, jazz & soul hits with a view toward transformation and constant surprise.
Through it all, Sessoms soars in a voice that is full and robust, unerring in pitch, and utterly at home in a wide variety of feels and settings. Her singing has met with praise in Rolling Stone, Billboard, Ebony and other numerous other publications.

Bill Bailey – Earl of Whimsy
After the 2016 sell-out tour, Larks in Transit, the UK’s very own straggle-haired polymath, Bill Bailey, returns to Australia with his new comedy and music extravaganza, Earl of Whimsy.
It has Bill’s trademark blend of satire and surrealism, stories and dismantled jokes, crowd sing-alongs, weird instruments and musical showstoppers. But there’s a distinctly historical feel to this show. With its tales of Britain’s fortunes past and present, of ancient Viking battles, of Shakespeare’s contribution to comedy, and Bill’s own ancestry, this is both a mockery and a celebration of national identity.
It’s also a journey of discovery. We find out where Knock Knock jokes came from, how we got days of the week, and why Nicky Minaj rejected a puffin sample for her latest single. There are lively audience discussions, a mass German singalong, and even some Cockney crab-dancing. Something for everyone.
Here’s a recent round-up of how Bill is described: ‘a martial arts master in mufti’, ‘the Jedi Knight of juxtaposition’ or even ‘our foremost comedy rock goblin’. Or is he, as Bill describes himself in his own words, an ‘Earl of Whimsy’. Whatever his title, this might be Bill’s cleverest, daftest, most eccentric show yet.
Happening Friday 9 November at the National Convention Centre from 7-10pm.

NOT-FOR-PROFITS WORKSHOP SERIES
Managing a not-for-profit (or for purpose) entity is not what it used to be. The level of competition has increased 10 fold and the amount of money available for supporting your activities has decreased by an even bigger number. Throw on top of this all the added expectations of corporate governance, best practice, competing for great staff and the high burn out rates and you wonder why you do it.
That’s easy – you’re passionate about the cause, but is that enough to make you sustainable? Times are a-changing and this sector has many opportunities and challenges not affecting other sectors. This series of workshops will look at some of the biggest issues facing organisations in the not-for-profit/for purpose sector today and present options on how to address them. There will also be an opportunity for you to connect with other local community groups and share your knowledge and experiences with one another.
Happening until Friday 9 November 2:30 pm at Lighthouse Business Innovation Centre, 6/65 Tennant Street, Fyshwick. See the website for more information.

Remembrance Day 2018
Remembrance Day has a special significance in 2018.
On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. Beginning with their stunning success at the battle of Hamel in July, the Australians had taken part in key battles at Amiens, Mont St Quentin and Peronne, and at the Hindenburg Line. By October the exhausted Australians were withdrawn from battle. They suffered almost 48,000 casualties during 1918, including more than 12,000 dead. To mark the centenary of these epic milestones that shaped Australia and the world, the Australian War Memorial will host a series of public events and commemorative activities, culminating in the Remembrance Day National Ceremony.
Happening Sunday 11 November at the Australian War Memorial, Campbell from 1:30pm 12pm. Free entry.
