Katie Noonan and Karin Schaupp have an intuitive musical connection. Their collaborations to date have earned them widespread praise and their latest co-creation, Songs of the Latin Skies, once again promises to enchant national audiences.

Together they journey through the great South American songbook of bossa nova, samba, salsa and tango, interpreting work by Gilberto Gil, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Luis Bonfa, Antonio Carlos Jobim and more. Renowned for breaking down genre boundaries, Katie Noonan’s technical mastery and pure voice makes her one of Australia’s most versatile and beloved vocalists. Guitarist Karin Schaupp is an internationally sought-after recitalist and soloist. They combine forces to create a unique sound, putting a fresh spin on Latin jazz and classical pieces from the musical masters of South America.

The album “Songs of The Latin Skies” pays homage to this wonderful genre, showcasing two of Australia’s most accomplished talents at their finest. It all springs to life in March 2017 as the tour kicks off in The Spiegeltent in Hobart, Katie and Karin travelling around the country for an extensive run of live dates.

WINTER HANDMADE MARKETS

Canberra’s award winning Handmade Market is a quarterly event, which brings together talented artists, designers, stylists, craftspeople and gourmets from all over Australia to showcase their handmade designs.

The Handmade Market is an indoor event to showcase over 250 Australian designer/makers. All products on sale are Australian made and designed. Shop at Handmade to support Australian designers and find something unique, well priced and where you can meet the maker. We have everything from fashion, furniture, sculpture, ceramics, children’s toys and clothing, jewellery and accessories and including their indoor gourmet food, wine and home wares hall.

The market is held at EPIC, Exhibition Park in Canberra. You can drive to the venue, there is a lot of parking including coach and a very large disabled area. ATMs are located on site. There is public transport to the event. Entry to the venue is from Northbourne Ave or Morisset Road.

Entry to the market is FREE but please support their door greeters, Anglicare, with a gold coin donation if you can. (Each event supports a different charity.)

Handmade Canberra are also supporting St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn at this event with their annual blanket and jumper drive and donations are welcomed.

MAKING DO: ‘JUGAAD’ WITH TRENT JANSEN

Design anthropologist, Trent Jansen will teach the ad hoc making and repair process of ‘Jugaad’ – the Indian notion of doing just enough with what you have on hand and figuring it out as you go. Over three hours, workshop participants will improvise with approaches to object making and repair based on what’s around and current moods. Alongside Trent, Canberra-based sculptor Jeremy Lepisto will help with workarounds, problem-solving and to share his making knowledge.

This workshop is held in conjunction with the ‘Porosity Kabari’ exhibition at Nishi Gallery. This show displays the results of an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural project between Australian object designer Trent Jansen, artist/architect Richard Goodwin, and Indian design thinker Ishan Khosla. The trio worked over three weeks to produce furniture and object pieces made from materials sourced solely from the ‘Chor Bazaar’ (thieves market) and ‘Kabari Bazaars’ (junk markets) in Mumbai, India.

Hotel Hotel’s ‘Making Do’ Fix and Make series looks at alternative ways of making and repairing objects and is designed to encourage us to consider the objects that already surround us in new ways.

WORLD OCEANS DAY AT THE NATIONAL ZOO AND AQUARIUM

World Oceans Day, held every 8 June, provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve the world’s oceans. This year, the National Zoo & Aquarium is hosting a special event to mark the occasion with special talks, short films, and activities for kids- plus plenty of freebies to get everyone started!

The Marine Stewardship Council (Msc) will be at the zoo this weekend helping to spread the word and will be providing lots of fun too!

World Oceans Day celebrations will take place on 10 and 11 June from 9.30am until 4.30pm in the Aquarium at the National Zoo & Aquarium, Weston Creek.

KIDS IN THE SHED

This is your chance to celebrate being a kid and doing what kids do best…having fun! Bring your kids, parents and grandparents to this super fun family day out at the Old Bus Depot Markets. All these kids having fun means a lively atmosphere and buzzing energy around the place, with loads of children’s entertainment, pony rides, a jumping castle, Milo the clown, face painting and more.

What might you find? Stacks of products that kids love including handcrafted toys, kids’ room accessories, artworks and lots of bright, modern handmade clothes for babies and little boys and girls. And of course, what’s a family day out without delicious treat foods. Yummo!

RUTHERGLEN’S WINERY WALKABOUT

Up for a road trip? Victoria’s original wine festival, the Rutherglen Winery Walkabout will once again be the place to be on the June long weekend.

From the beginnings in 1974 when the Winemakers’ of north-east Victoria joined forces to promote their quality wines, the festival has grown in size and stature. Rutherglen Winery Walkabout now attracts over 20,000 visitors and includes the Rotary Country Fair on the Sunday.

Armed with Walkabout glasses and wristband, the young, old and in between descend on the wineries for a spectacle not to be missed.

Don’t want to drive? A TAC Shuttle bus service is picking up passengers from regional areas such as Lavington, Albury, Wodonga, Howlong, Wangaratta, Chiltern, Mulwala, Yarrawonga, Bundalong, Corowa and Wahgunyah. The Shuttle buses are a hop on and hop off service – you choose which winery you want to go to.

Melodrama in Meiji Japan

Step into the tumultuous world of Meiji Japan (1868–1912), through a selection of stunning Japanese woodblock illustrations. Used to illustrate Japanese novels, these beautiful images, known as kuchi-e (literally, ‘mouth/opening picture’), accompany stories filled with drama, tragedy and intrigue, reflecting the uncertainty of the times.

Curated by Dr. Gary Hickey, the exhibition draws upon a substantial collection of kuchi-e amassed by University of NSW Emeritus Professor Richard Clough (1921-2014) and donated to the Library. This collection, along with other works acquired, forms one of the most significant collections of this genre in the world and the largest focused collection of Japanese art in Australia. The exhibition features over twenty artists and a range of subjects, illustrating a fascinating history of a genre profiled for the first time in a major exhibition.

2017 WORLD KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY, TROVE CANBERRA
