So, you want to enter a triathlon?

Posted on

Canberrans love a triathlon.

In fact, in 2017-18 we had the most members per million of population in the country—with more than double or even triple many of other states. In this year, women made up more than 60% of Triathlon ACT members.

If you’ve never participated in a triathlon, however, it can seem quite overwhelming. After all, the Olympic distance involves a 1500 metre swim, a 40-kilometre bike ride and a 10-kilometre run.

Challenging? Yes. But that’s precisely what makes it so rewarding.

HOW DO I EVEN GET STARTED?

Females in Training (FIT) is a not-for-profit community group that offers a novice triathlon training program for women over 18 who are new to the sport.

It’s perfect for those who are looking for a way to build well-rounded fitness, keen to train with like-minded women, and requiring guidance on the journey to their first triathlon.

The novice program culminates in a SuperSprint distance triathlon (200 metre swim, 10 kilometre bike ride, 2 kilometre run) on 30 November.

WHAT DO I DO/WEAR/EAT FOR A TRIATHLON?

Included in the Women’s Triathlon Training Program (WTTP) are weekly training sessions in the three triathlon disciplines (running, cycling and swimming) with other women who are novice triathletes.

Participants are invited to special information sessions with information on different aspects of triathlon— from nutrition, to what to wear (including which sports bra), stretching to bike maintenance.

It’s all covered in an easily digestible, beginner-friendly way, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions as you go.

DO I HAVE TO SWIM IN THE LAKE?

For many people new to triathlon, the swim presents the biggest hurdle. For new swimmers, swimming 200 metres is a feat in itself, let alone the fact that’s completed in the lake, without orderly swimming lanes or crystal clear, chlorinated water.

Lake familiarisation swims are included in WTTP, so by the time your first triathlon comes around, you’ll be well versed in swimming in open water.

The intention of the whole program is to give you the confidence in yourself and your abilities to undertake the challenge, in a way where you feel supported and encouraged.

I’M INTERESTED–HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Registrations are now open, with the cost of WTTP is $322 for an eight-week program.

That covers the cost of the program and registration with FIT and Triathlon Australia.

I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS…
