Every Monday for more than eight years, we’ve published This Week in The Can, our comprehensive guide to everything happening around the city this week – but sometimes it’s just too epic to get through!

That’s why each Friday we publish our Weekend Edit—a curated selection of events we think you’ll love!

HANDMADE MARKET CANBERRA

They have everything from fashion, furniture, sculpture, ceramics, children’s toys and clothing, jewellery and accessories and including an indoor gourmet food & wine pavilion.

The Handmade Market is a quarterly indoor event to showcase over 280 Australian creative businesses. All products on sale are Australian made and designed.

Shop at Handmade to support Australian designers and find something unique, well priced, where you can meet the maker. They have everything from fashion, furniture, sculpture, ceramics, children’s toys and clothing, jewellery and accessories and including an indoor gourmet food and wine pavilion. Perfect for all your Easter and Mother’s Day shopping.

The market is held at EPIC, Exhibition Park in Canberra in the Coorong pavilion, Conference Centre & Budawang pavilion.

You can drive to the venue. Parking is on the main oval just follow the signs. Parking and entry are free. Disability parking is located at the front of the Budawang pavilion. ATMs are located on site. There is public transport to the event.

Unfortunately, they do not have wheelchairs for hire. Only service dogs are allowed at the venue.

Entry to the market is FREE but please support the door greeters, Menslink with a gold coin donation if you can. (Each event supports a different charity.)

SAVOUR SNOWY MOUNTAINS – A WEEKEND OF FOOD & WINE

Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa is once again hosting a weekend of delicious Food & Wine with Savour Snowy Mountains.

The weekend will celebrate the seasonal local produce on offer in the south-east region of New South Wales.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience and celebrate all things Autumn. The weekend will be filled with a series of food masterclasses and culinary collaborations, exclusive chef dinners, farmer’s market aswell as entertainment accompanied by a refreshing crisp glass of cool climate wine.

The Snowy Mountains is becoming well-known for rich, hearty ingredients. Many of these ingredients will be incorporated over the weekend in the chef dinners and through market stall offerings.

CANBERRA KIDS MARKET

Stallholder Nibbly Bits

Canberra Kids Market is THE place to find new, handmade and pre-loved, clothing, toys, books, games, accessories and equipment for babies, toddlers and young ones.

LIVE BY THE VINES AT MOUNT MAJURA VINEYARD

Local musicians Leisa Keen and John Mackey will be live by the vines this Friday 22 March from 6 pm.

Mount Majura Winery will be opening from 5:30 for everyone to grab a spot, taste some wine, collect their Schmicnics hamper and settle in for a great evening of food, wine and music.

A $10 fee will include free wine tasting and entry on the evening. Mount Majura has partnered with Schmicnics to provide gourmet picnic hampers for the evening which you will be able to pre-purchase and pick up on the night.

Wine will be available for purchase by the glass or bottle and some local beers will also be available for purchase on the evening.

It Takes a Village Group Exhibition

Featuring the works of eight leading Canberra artists, It takes a Village celebrates the diversity of our birthing village ­— everyone who nurtures and helps raise our children.

It Takes a Village presents works by Niki van Buuren, Lynnice Church (Keen), Jane Duong, Lee Grant, Fatima Killeen, Rosalind Lemoh, Savanhdary Vongpoothorn and Marzena Wasikowska, and has been curated by Jennifer McFarlane, Curator of Arts & Health at Canberra Health Services. Parents from around Australia will also contributed photographs recording the moment their child met the village.

Maternity Services at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children (CHWC) acknowledges the support of the Canberra Hospital Foundation, which has enabled the commissioning and display of these works.

Following this exhibition at PhotoAccess, the works will be permanently installed in the Birth Suite, where they will support the CHWC’s inclusive approach to birthing.

Showing until 30 March at PhotoAccess, Manuka Arts Centre, Corner Manuka Circle & New South Wales Crescent, Griffith.

Pop Yum Cha at Natural Nine

In the mood some great Asian fusion food? Natural Nine has revamped its Pop Yum Cha menu, with new mouth-watering additions including Salt & Pepper Fried Bao, Potato Noodles with Chilli & Sesame, and Crispy Whitebait with Tom Yum Mayo.

The food has drawn inspiration from the flavours and fun aesthetics you see in cities such as Hong Kong and Taiwan while still staying true to the unique techniques, playful food design, and punchy flavour combinations Natural Nine is famous for.

While you’re there, try one of six new cocktails including the Rabbit – a zesty combination of Tanqueray, cherry brandy, orange and mint – and the Sheep, a delicious drop of Blue Curacao, lychee liqueur and grapefruit!

Canberra Comedy Festival

Have You Been Paying Attention star Anne Edmonds.

Canberra Comedy Festival presents more than 70 comedy shows in the capital over one week in March, bringing the finest comedic talent to Canberra from around the world.

See some of the very best acts from the festival in the Gala on Tuesday 19 March, as well as a variety of shows featuring everything from local Canberra talent to some of the biggest stars on the international comedy circuit.

Alliance Française French Film Festival 2019

2019 marks the 30th anniversary of Australia’s most tantalising multi-cultural movie event, the Alliance Française French Film Festival

Screening at Palace Electric in NewActon from 7 March – 10 April, this cherished celebration of French culture will be presented by the Alliance Française in association with the Embassy of France in Australia and Unifrance Films. Read more about the program here.

Liquidfest 2019

Axis Youth Centre presents LiquidFest 2019 featuring local artists. This free, all ages, drug and alcohol-free event can be enjoyed by the whole family.
The festival is a really great opportunity for young, emerging bands and performers to get a chance to perform to a crowd. For the rest of us, it is just a chance to have a lot of fun and enjoy the music while enjoying summer in the pool, so don’t miss out!
This year we have heaps of great acts lined up, including local artists Adriana & Bianca. To top it all off, we have local acts Partly Cloudy, The Unmanned Band, Fvceless, and Rob Aspinall have joined the lineup, along with DJ Cuddles.

Inspired by International Women’s Day, The Ladies collection of 123 portraits and interviews by Amanda Summons opens on Wednesday 6 March.

The collection is driven by the desire to give each of her ladies a chance to empower themselves through owning their self-worth by stepping in front of the lens and by recording their written thoughts in the interviews about kindness, confidence and giant hamsters.

The Ladies Collection can never truly be complete for there will be always be an endless list of ladies that she would be honoured to capture in a frame.

Inked: Australian Cartoons

Inked features a selection of the best cartoons from the National Library of Australia’s extensive collections.

The exhibition draws from over 14,000 cartoons by dozens of artists, from before the arrival of the  First Fleet in 1788 up to the present. Each work is a time capsule, offering a snapshot of Australian life.

Visitors will be captivated by the works on display by many greats of Australian cartooning, including Will Dyson, Judy Horacek, Michael Leunig, David Low, Phil May, Alan Moir, Bruce Petty, Martin Sharp, Cathy Wilcox and many more.

INKED: PLAY

Come and see the famous Gumnut Babies going off to war. Create your own cartoon or draw a protest sign to hang on our display wall. Get stuck into a book. Find all the hidden Inkie the Echidnas and explore whether the world is doomed or domed.

Inked Play is open daily as part of Inked: Australian Cartoons. Find it by following Inkie the Echidna.

The Pop Inn @ Regatta Point

Join The Pop Inn, Canberra’s cutest portable wine bar, for a drink near Regatta Point on the lake with a gorgeous view towards the National Library.
