Get out your stretchy pants. We’ve got some serious eating to do. We’ve updated our list of 13 new places with a few more that have opened their doors in recent weeks. Catch up here…
Bar Rochford
A cracking wine list and food influenced by European, Spain and Modern Australia—Bar Rochford looks set to be the new destination for those who love ‘very fine times’. It’s sophisticated with a touch of grunge and great for a quick drink after work, or for settling in for a lengthy food and wine session.

Three Mills Bakery
The A.BAKER bakery has grown up and got a place of its own. Majura Park workers—and Gungahlin commuters—will rejoice at the chance of getting fresh artisan bread and pastries, plus amazing breakfasts and lunches. Now you don’t have to go to NewActon for sausage rolls with lamb, harissa and parmesan; pizza and flatbread such as roast beetroot, Persian fetta, red onion and rosemary, and toasties like slow cooked lamb shoulder, cumin, pumpkin seeds, cream cheese and hot sauce.

Barbers Inc

Suke Suke
Suke Suke promises a “fun, high paced underground food and drinks venue” in Civic’s Sydney Building. An Izakaya (or Japanese gastropub) serving up “Japanese inspired food, beers, whisky, sake, Canberra district wines and a range of over 60 gins,” this is one to visit this weekend.

Betti Bravo’s
The Kingston Foreshore space formerly occupied by The Rum Bar is transformed into a Spanish/Caribbean-influenced watering hole and Betti Bravo’s is packing them in! There’s a lively menu of pintxos and some more substantial meals—our pick is the Crisp confit chicken wings, corn puree, jamon crumbs, asparagus, tonka bean mayo—and some interesting important drops. The beer bottles being delivered in paper bags is undoubtedly meant to be hipster, but we’re not sure it will catch on.

Guild
Unleash your inner geek at Guild—Canberra’s only Boardgames restaurant. Its shelves are lined with every type of board game, from old classics such as Risk and Carcassonne to the new Game of Thrones board game. The food menu has been carefully crafted so it doesn’t get in the way of gaming; with wood-fired pizzas, arancini and mezze platters to share, not to mention a fully stocked bar with beers and ciders to help wash it all down.

Soul Cartel
It’s a little piece of the ‘Deep South’ in the middle of Lonsdale Street. Soul Cartel is dishing up New Orleans’-inspired “soul food highlighting…Cajun and creole flavours,” specialising in Po’ Boys. Po’ whats? They’re the Louisiana version of a submarine sandwich, with crusty french bread, crispy shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, remoulade or Creole mayonnaise paired with meat, seafood, sausage or whatever you want the main event of your sandwich to be. We love the Laroquette – buttermilk fried chicken, slaw, onions, pickles, American cheese and cartel mayo. Yum.

Ducks Nuts
Dickson has received a much-needed injection of new blood with Ducks Nuts—a bar and grill modelled on a traditional pub. It takes over the corner spot previously occupied by O’Neill’s Irish Pub, and it’s had quite the makeover. Danny Russo of Russolini Group, who worked on Braddon’s Marble & Grain has been brought in to devise a classic gastropub menu with a twist. Expect to find favourites like various cuts of steak with classic sauces, burgers and dishes for grazing. There will also be inventive sides and desserts, craft beers on tap, and ‘mini mains’ for kids under 12—all at a price point that make Ducks Nuts an inviting and affordable ‘local’.

Fillos Café and Gelato Bar
Fillos Souvlaki has been serving up fantastic Greek food since last winter, and the latest addition to their offering will sate those sweet cravings. Expect to find authentic treats like Loukoumathes with ice cream, Kok (a kind of Greek sponge sandwich), Bougatsa (a filo pastry with warm custard filling) and much more.

Chairman and Yip
This one isn’t ‘technically’ as much new, as it is reinvented. The Chairman & Yip‘s transition into the space formerly occupied by Malamay—and into an eatery which brings together the best elements of the two—is a smart move. The large disused balcony space adjoining the former Malamay has been reinvented as an airy covered ‘Chinese garden’, windows sporting transparent panels of red which make the whole section appear like a lantern. A menu which boasts some old favourites and the addition of a few new items (Lobster Brioche Rolls, anyone?) makes this one to put on your ‘must eat’ list.
Next door at Lilotang, they’re also shaking things up with some delicious lunch bento boxes and the new Sake Bar. Enjoy classic Japanese after-work fare, such as Tokyo Chilli Chicken wings, Seaweed Seafood taco and Braised Beef Cubes, with the highlights of the drinks menu Japanese sakes, beers and whiskies, along with Japanese-themed cocktails The Chairman & Yip | 1 Burbury Close, Barton| thechairmanandyip.chairmangroup.com.au
Chez Kimchi
Chez Kimchi opened in Canberra City a good six months ago, and we were a little late to discover it…but when we did we found 14 TYPES OF KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN! From Incredible Gangjung to Sweet Spicy Chicken and everything in between, if you’re a fan of crispy bird, this is the place for you. There are other Korean delights if you’re in the mood for variety— four different pancakes (oyster, seafood, kimchi and vegetable) plus dumplings, hotpots and bibimbap.

Clementine
Clementine is a warm and vibrant regional restaurant just down the road with the familiar face of Adam Bantock on the pans (and co-owner with Brooke Sainsbery). Set in a 1950’s weatherboard cottage with views across the lawn to the striking Lovett Chapel, the menu is strongly influenced by regional French Italian style cooking and changes weekly to utilise the highest quality seasonal produce. The well-considered wine list is dedicated exclusively to local wines.

Little Bird
There are some veteran names behind Barton’s Little Bird (Dan Buttress, Craig Wade, Justin Harvey and Dave Peters) which leads us to be excited about what’s in store for this beautiful light-filled white and timber space in the new Governor Place development in Barton. There’s excellent coffee and a fresh breakfast and lunch menu seven days (not to mention convenient parking—it’s on the ground floor of a new multistorey carpark), Little Bird is the latest chapter in the suburb’s continuing evolution as a place to live, not just work.

Vincent
Vincent brings sophisticated European fare and some great drops to Barton, also in the Governor Place development. We love a good wine bar!

Pasta’d
The guys behind The Hamlet’s excellent 10″ Custom Pizzeria have expanded their operation to pasta, opening PASTA’D—a “pick your pasta/pick your sauce” high quality takeaway. There are a handful of old favourites on the fixed menu, while the changing blackboard has some more adventurous dishes. It’s the perfect offering for Braddonites after a quick meal to grab on their way home and is sure to be popular during Canberra’s long winter days ahead.

Yat Bun Tong Dumpling House
Dumplings! They’re not all that’s on offer at Yat Bun Tong Dumpling House but they’re guaranteed to get keen foodies hustling to the Arte building in Lonsdale Street, Braddon. The fitout is a pleasing mix of new and old, and the menu includes a range of Asian delights. We love the noodles, too.
Yat Bun Tong Dumpling House, 10 Lonsdale Street, Braddon.
Chaki Chaki
It seems only fitting that the origami-like stylings of Braddon’s ORI building houses an authentic Japanese restaurant. Chaki Chaki is a stunning space on the balcony level, overlooking Lonsdale Street—a combination of the ubiquitous ‘industrial’ aesthetic and Asian minimalism. Head Chef, Yujiro Takeda, opened cult favourite Tasuke in 1997 and presents an intriguing menu: two ‘degustation’ style options as well as an array of tapas-style dishes. Try the Hot Spring Boiled Egg With Tofu Skin in Delicious Bonito Stock.

COMING SOON
The Pedlar
Opening in mere weeks, The Pedlar is an upmarket café/pub coming to Campbell’s new ‘Creswell’ development on Constitution Avenue. There’ll be something for everyone—from families to those after a big night.
Governor Place
There’s a LOT happening in Barton over the next little while: Genki Sushi (Asian), Yogi’s Kitchen (Indian) and the Barton Grocer (a much-needed neighbourhood grocer who will have lunch options such as fresh salads, sandwiches and juices in their food-to-go section) are all set to open soon.
Binny’s Kathitto
Binny’s Kathitto has gained quite a following with his Street Indian van at The Hamlet. He’ll keep on with this venue, while opening a bricks and mortar eatery at 5 Lonsdale Street, next to Hopscotch in April.
Pepper Lunch
DIY Teppan coming soon to Civic for those who like to cook their own lunch. I’m lazy and like others to do it for me when I’m not at home, but whatever floats your boat!
