Morning Glory brings the love with new incarnation—ILY

The team behind XO and Morning Glory will this week unveil ILY—a contemporary kitchen serving up simple, comforting food with plenty of room for surprises.

A reinvention of the Morning Glory space and offering, ILY (an acronym for ‘I Love You’) will be serving up homely, simple food with a focus on execution and local produce—with creative flair and a strong dose of good humour.

“This is a home-style kitchen, but not at all how we know it,” says co-owner Greg Lally.

The daytime menu includes surefire breakfast hits like a breakfast gnocchi, sweet potato hash and rillettes, before transitioning to a lunchtime menu that delivers favourites like chicken fattoush, steak frites and a beef burger that—judging by the photo—is going to be a mainstay on the HerCanberra lunch order.

Coffee is sourced from local roaster and in-house barista HAEL, with an assortment of house-made baked goods.

The night menu will fill the dining room with the familiar smells of home-style classics such as roast chicken with spinach, confit garlic and artichoke, and roast potato pie ,while leaving plenty of room for innovative surprises like kingfish wing with burnt scallion and pickled onion, and a beef cheek which uses a rub from spent in-house coffee from local roaster HAEL, partnered with malt glaze and cucumber.

At the helm of the kitchen is Tim West, formerly of Bowral’s Biota Dining and who boast stints at Noma Australia, Esquire in Brisbane and a finalist spot as 2016 Queensland Young Chef of the Year.

While the menu is completely new, ILY is both an evolution and continuation of Morning Glory in the NewActon precinct.

“The transformation was sparked by the challenges of 2020 and its butterfly effect through the industry. It was a catalyst to explore new ways of working, connecting with suppliers and serving the local community,” says Mr Lally.

“ILY celebrates all that the team loves about food, wine and dining in Canberra and the patchwork of producers, innovators, instigators and consumers that support it.”

The fitout sees a departure from Morning Glory’s moody interiors. Canberra design powerhouse Capezio Copeland has conceived a fresh, light palette which will bring new emotion and warmth to the dining room—white, burgundy, and pink hues matching the character of ILY and the team’s focus on creating good food, with love. We can’t wait for the big reveal!
