Home to the crème de la crème of cool climate wines, Murrumbateman is a mecca of world-class pours and artisan fare.

Uniting the region’s premier winemakers and producers, the Murrumbateman Moving Feast returns this October long weekend. Imagine a roaming degustation, shedding the confines of the traditional set menu for a pick-and-mix-inspired approach—all in the stunning Canberra wine region.

Enjoy a bespoke tasting experience just a hop, skip and a jump from the border as 19 wineries and specialty producers from in and around Murrumbateman plate up mouth-watering dishes paired with the region’s best pours.

Sounds like the best way to spend a long-weekend, no?

HOW IT WORKS

We know what you’re thinking— a tasting tour that spans an entire region sounds tricky, right? Well, it’s actually pretty simple. Each participating venue serves up an entrée-sized main or dessert, which you can purchase for $25 and $20 respectively.

The reduced portion size and modest price points mean you can truly taste the region, sampling as many eats and treats a possible. Every dish is designed with wine in mind, matched with a complimentary local pour. But that’s not all, you can also take your Riedel wine glass, valued at $20 each, home as a memento.

ON THE PLATE

DIONYSUS WINERY

Tuck into a duo of sliders featuring slow roasted pork belly with sriracha and slaw or grilled haloumi, pickle, lettuce and Kewpie mayo. Wash it down with a glass of Dionysus’ Riesling.

For the sweet tooths, amp up the indulgence with a rich salted caramel mousse made with Lindt chocolate and served with a dollop of salted caramel and cream. Match it with their cabernet sauvignon.

FOUR WINDS VINEYARD

Engage in Four Winds’ simple philosophy of great wine and wood-fired cuisine this Moving Feast with gourmet pizzas straight from the oven. Choose from fresh tomato and basil pesto, or chorizo and onion, paired with your choice of delicious wine—because let’s face it, pizza and vino is a match made in gastronomic heaven.

Hungry for more? Sink your teeth into the brandy cheesecake, touted as the best you’ll ever try, paired with delightfully delicate rosé. With a claim like that how could you not pick up a slice?

GALLAGHER WINES

Out at Gallagher, Seasoned Thyme will be serving up a storm of lemongrass chicken skewers served over aromatic greens with sweet and zesty dipping sauce paired with their 2018 Riesling.

For dessert, indulge in decadent snowball doughnuts filled with dark chocolate cream with berry coulis and matched with their 2016 sparkling Shiraz.

MURRUMBATEMAN WINERY

Revered for their Moving Feast seared scallops, Murrumbateman Winery doesn’t disappoint, this year pairing them with fresh linguini and delightful Riesling sauce. One for the lovers of white wine, enjoy the winery’s 2018 Dry Riesling on the plate and in the glass.

Murrumbateman Winery

A dessert made with Murrumbateman’s cool climate in mind, the winery will be serving spiced scones served with whipped dark chocolate ganache and fruit compote and matched with their delicious 2017 Tempranillo.

OLLEYVILLE RESTAURANT

For something on the lighter side, head to Shaw Vineyard Estate’s Olleyville Restaurant for wood-fired, rustic fare. Chow down on Tasmanian salmon, soba noodles, shitake mushrooms and bok choy paired with Semillon Sauvignon Blanc.

Hang around for something sweet with the strawberry and basil mousse, pressed strawberries and aged balsamic, expertly matched with Estate Riscato.

WINS CREEK MEADERY

Not a huge fan of vino? How about an alternative? Wins Creek offer a variety of delicious flavours of mead and for the Moving Feast they’ll be pairing their ginger mead with a honeyed chicken and aubergine biryani which will be served with raita, chutney and naan (with gluten free and vegetarian options available too).

Alternatively, you can sample their saffron honey syrup cake, or dark chocolate and chestnut honey ice cream with cinnamon toffee spears and biscotti matched with their Keely Magic mead.

GRANITEVALE ESTATE

Take your tastebuds on a tour of the deep south at Granitevale Estate where they’ll be serving up Bourbon glazed beef ribs slow cooked in a bourbon-based sauce and served with a crunchy side salad. Top it off with a glass of their 2015 Shiraz.

Still got room? How about an individual banoffee pavlova with cream, slivered almonds, banana, crushed chocolate covered honeycomb drizzled with caramel and chocolate fudge. They recommend serving it with a glass of their 2016 PinkIce sangiovese or sauvignon blanc. Cheers to that.

OFF THE PLATE

While the weekend is dedicated to eats, treats and vino, the public holiday Monday is all about the tunes. ‘Music Monday’ sees an array of Canberra’s musical talent hit the stage across the selection of the region’s cellar doors. Find the full list of venues here.

Such is the nature of a multi-venue degustation, it goes without saying there’s going to be some travel involved. Get around with ease and take the stress out of your roaming taste test with a tour bus. Head on over to the Moving Feast’s website for a range of recommended tour operators.
