The District dishes up a local with real flavour
Posted on
When I walk into The District at 11am on a cold, wet winter’s day it’s already packed with diners of all ages.
From mums getting in an early lunch with their little ones to grandmas grabbing a cuppa with friends, it’s clear that this is Crace’s meeting place.
The District has been a hit with northsiders since it opened in 2014, known for its friendly and casual vibe and versatility (it’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day). We’re here to try the new all-day winter menu and are pleased to find hearty pub staples sitting alongside some more adventurous options.

We settle in next to the fire and consider our options. The weather calls for something warm and hearty, and all of it looks good. We decide to start with the Arancini Balls and they don’t disappoint—all gooey, cheesy rice encased in a golden crunchy crumb. Mushroom and thyme give a pleasing depth of flavour, while the punchy Nap sauce cuts through the richness.

Now that our palates are alive, we move on to the main event. Two of us stick to the Something Light section of the menu—but that doesn’t mean you should expect small portions—the servings are nothing if not generous.
I can’t go past the Creamy Garlic Prawns (never can, if it’s on the menu) and they’re everything I’d hoped—plump and juicy and smothered in a creamy garlic sauce that’s equally moreish when forked up with the accompanying jasmine rice.

The cauliflower, potato and celery soup special is the ideal choice for a grey day, and it’s a hearty delight. Thick and flavourful, it warms from the inside out, and we take great delight in mopping up every last bit with slices of toasted sourdough.

Our remaining two diners look to the Mains. Of course, there are the burgers, pizzas and pastas you’d expect to find at any great local—but dishes like Sticky Pork Belly raise the bar; rich with Asian flavours, it is deeply caramelised and utterly delicious.

The Salmon Fillet is elegant, boasting crispy skin and served with a velvety mash and tangy broccolini. The addition of pickled radishes provides sweetness and a textural pop, while the House Butter sauce brings everything together as a harmonious whole.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a local without specials, and they’re boldly displayed next to the bar (think $20 pizza and pasta with house wine or tap beer, or a $30 Porterhouse). Changing with the season—and Chef’s mood—they’re a great lunch or dinner option for a great price.

With a wine list full of Canberra region favourites, inventive cocktails, and live music on Sundays, The District has all the ingredients for the perfect neighbourhood destination—but it’s also worth a road trip. Time to head north.
