The voices of Australia’s gutsy women journalists are being brought to life in a new season of the National Library of Australia’s podcast, Bookmark This.
Inspired by the NLA Publishing book, Bold Types, the book that told the stories of women journalists working in Australia between 1860 to the end of World War II, Bold Types the podcast is hosted by The Guardian’s Amy Remeikis who is joined by book author Dr Patricia Clarke and a stellar line-up of contemporary female journalists reflecting both their experiences and those of their forebears.
Each episode in the six-part season will feature discussion between Amy and Dr Clarke, readings of the work and words of selected historical women journalists, and interviews with female journalists of today.

Amy Remeikis and Dr Patricia Clarke
Podcasts include a stellar lineup of Patricia Karvelas, Mia Freedman, Zara Seidler and Suzanne Dredge. Avani Dias and Sophie McNeill, Zoe Daniel and Nas Campanella and Ita Buttrose.
Bold Types tells the stories of some of Australia’s most tenacious female journalists—such as Anna Blackwell, Alice Henry, Stella Allen, Francis Taylor and Janet Mitchell.
They were the pioneers of women in media across Australia, reporting from over a century ago—from overseas postings, war zones and in newsrooms which were the exclusive domain of men.
Veteran journalist Dr Clarke is herself a trailblazer, having been the only woman on the Melbourne staff at the Australian News and Information Bureau in the early 1950s. In a detailed epilogue, Patricia shares stories of her own life and career in the days of crowded newsrooms, clattering typewriters, and overflowing cigarette trays.
She is now a historian, who has written extensively on women in Australian history and the history of journalism.
In Bold Types, Dr Clarke recounts the chequered journey of women journalists in the fight for gender equality, singling out a number of independent, adventurous women who ventured far and wide in search of news, relevance and equality.
The podcasts consider the impact these women have made on the industry as well as recounting stories from the country’s current crop of top female journalists.
