Want to be at the top of Santa’s ‘Nice’ list? RSPCA ACT is looking for foster homes for shelter dogs

Planning on sticking around Canberra this Christmas? This is an adorable opportunity to open your heart and home.
Currently overflowing with dogs – many of whom will be spending their first ever Christmas in a kennel – RSPCA ACT is urgently calling for locals to get into the seasonal spirit and open their home for a few days to a shelter pup or a bigger four-legged floof.
After all, Christmas is all about sharing love, hope and joy – and why should our furry friends miss out?
Seeking short-term homes to give the animals the experience of warmth and love, CEO Michelle Robertson says while staff and volunteers will still be on-site during the public holidays, the organisation will be closed to the public, lessening the opportunity for the puppies and dogs to find their forever homes.
“Truthfully the thought of these poor dogs and puppies spending those public holidays over Christmas here in their kennels makes me quite sad,” she says.
“In foster care, these dogs would have a magical time and at the very least, by letting them experience the normality and routines of a caring family home, you’ll be helping them for when they finally find a forever home.”
Interested in making Christmas magical for an animal in need?
RSPCA ACT is hosting an information session at its animal Shelter in Weston on Tuesday 17 December at 5.30pm ahead of two proposed foster-care periods of:
- Monday 23 until Friday 27 December (four nights minimum)
- Saturday 28 December until Thursday 2 January (five nights minimum)
But it won’t be as easy as picking up a pup and going on your merry – pun intended – way. RSPCA ACT staff will be matching applicants with the ideal canine pairing, depending on factors including family, existing pets, capability, yard size and more.
“Foster caring is one of the most positive and rewarding experiences you can do and the difference you’ll be making to a dog’s life is immeasurable,” says Michelle.
“I’m also pretty certain that the personality of some of these great dogs will a little extra-special something to your Christmas experience as well.”
And don’t worry – to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for everyone involved, RSPCA ACT will also supply all required food, equipment, toys, blankets, enrichment and advice.
Just don’t blame us if the experience turns into a foster fail and you end up with a new furry family member.
