Future Generation: Lexi Bannister

She’s known in the industry as “Queen of the Blondes” and had a hand in creating some of the New York Fashion Week’s runway hair for designers such as Sandy Liang and Ji Oh.
Closer to home Lexi Bannister assisted Renya Xydis on the Toni Maticevski show at the last Mercedes Benz Fashion Week – fulfilling a dream to work with her favourite designer.
Lexi lives and breathes styling and has been doing so since she was 21 and began her apprenticeship in Queensland. Last year, her client base and editorial bookings allowed her to make the leap to freelancing where she brings her creative flair out of the salon and onto the set and backstage.
She regularly features in the pages of HerCanberra and Big Ink Magazine and was thrilled with a recent editorial ‘Spectrum’ published in Coco Fashion Magazine in America.
She now tends to the tresses of some of the country’s most notable heads – supermodel-in-the-making Zoe Barnard, and TV presenter Erin Molan among them. She’s also a favourite stylist of The Bachelor set having coloured both Keira Maguire and Rachael Gouvignon’s glossy locks. And to round out a creative career, Lexi can be found playing the long-suffering stylist to comedienne Tanya Hennessy in her “what people say” series.
What was your first serious “hairstyle”?
When I was 16 I wanted the “beach wave” so mum took me to the salon and I got a perm…It was definitely not what I expected and it was torture growing it out! To be honest I can’t remember why I even wanted it and now everyone who asks me about perms becomes receives a lecture from me to talk them out of it! Just don’t do it!

Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration everywhere – in magazines, walking around a city, fashion trends, art, EVERYTHING! But I think wherever you find inspiration always make sure to make it your own.
What is the most common mistake people make when styling their own hair?
Not using styling products, quality tools, not letting the hair fully cool down AND using a whole can of hairspray to make the style hold. Ha, it doesn’t work.
Whose hair would you most love to be let loose in?
At the moment I’m really into Sophia Amoruso and all things ‘GirlBoss’ so I could pick her brain on building your own empire while I did her hair.
