Six Canberra podcasts you need to add to your queue

Posted on

Deep dives into fashion, cyber security, food, psychology, and more—there are some amazing podcasts being produced right here in Canberra.

And while it might feel like everyone and their mother has a podcast these days (about some very niche topics), there’s something special about zoning out and listening to locals chat about the things they’re passionate about. Grab your headphones and get ready to add to the queue—these are the Canberra-based podcasts you should be binging.

Girl Talk Cyber

Designed for young women who don’t engage in cyber security (or want to and don’t know where to start), Girls Talk Cyber breaks down the basics—like what it is and why it’s important while removing the ‘tech-bro’ jargon. Created by local cyber security consultants Emily and Julia, it aims to encourage healthy cyber habits to help you make informed decisions online.

An example? What to do if you were involved in a data breach (anyone else affected by the Optus hack…?).

Best listened to: When going on a walk.

The Psychology of your 20s

It’s a podcast exploring the confusing conversations we don’t (but should) have in our 20’s—and it’s taking the world by storm. But did you know The Psychology of Your 20’s actually began right here in Canberra?

Recording her very first episode in the back of her car in O’Connor, in this podcast Australian National University psychology grad Jemma Sbeg explores topics ranging from anxiety to friendship breakups, loneliness, body image, full-time work, and even soul mates.

Basically, Jemma just wants to help explain the weird and wacky feelings that anyone in their 20’s might be going through.

Best listened to: When you feel confused about life.

Heart of the Storm

A six-part audio documentary series comprised of 200 raw and utterly compelling interviews with those at the helm of the Braidwood region’s Black Summer bushfires, the Heart of The Storm podcast is haunting and powerful.

From the Braidwood Fire Chief who compares the collective action of 20 fire trucks to ‘Bombay Ballet’, to the story of nearby Araluen where one man recounted his determination to save his home, armed with only his hose, it’s a powerful discussion of what ultimately affects bushfire season: climate change.

Best listened to: Now. The Bureau of Meteorology is maintaining its “alert” watch for El Niño, which means increased risks of drought, heatwaves, and bushfires this summer.

Tailored Talk

In this fashion-forward podcast, Sammy Rose (whose voice you might recognise from the amplifyCBR newsroom) decodes a very overwhelming world: fashion and beauty. Born out of her own love for the industry, in the bite-sized episodes of Tailored Talk, Sammy explores every topic you could think of—from how to get a bra fitted, to fashion trends and avoiding ‘pooey’ tan hands (you know what we mean).

Best listened to: When you need some fashion inspiration or a confidence boost.

Twoboo

20 years after first recording their university radio program, Twoboo is a Canberra-based podcast that’s come back into action to challenge the status quo, push the boundaries, and spark trailblazing conversations. Nothing is taboo—and that’s the point.

From chatting about pornography to exploring voluntary assisted dying, Melanie Skinner and Sean Costello are revisiting the interviews they originally recorded in the late 1990s to see what’s changed and see what is still considered taboo all these years later.

Best listened to: When you want to reflect on society.

Alex The Seal

Did you grow up in the 80s? Love 80s music? Love reminiscing? Then do we have the podcast for you. Presented by HerCanberra columnist Jo Pybus and host of The Good Girl Confessional podcast Sandy Lowres, Alex The Seal (and if you get the joke already, this is really the podcast for you) is all about how the music you grew up with shaped the person you are today. From vinyl to cassette to CD and from Countdown to MTV,  they tackle a new topic each episode as they rewind the soundtrack of their youth.

Best listened to: When you need a good old 80s music dopamine hit.
