A makeup workshop with a difference

Nothing showcased the changing expectations of how women should be applying makeup, more so than this month’s royal wedding.

When Meghan Markle waltzed down the aisle without a hint of contouring or the overly smoky eye that so often dominates Instagram, even—gasp—revealing her natural freckles, it sent the social media world into a collective spin. But why?

Canberra makeup artist Jessica Peris calls it “the glam trap”, and for younger girls on social media, it’s particularly tricky to navigate.

“When younger girls see (usually Photoshopped) images of people like Kim Kardashian on a regular basis, with packed-on makeup, that becomes the new normal, and the more they see it the more they think that’s how they should look,” she says.

Avoiding the “glam trap” is part of what Jessica, together with Alaina Brown, founder of positive affirmation company Shii Mii, will be exploring next month in a “not just makeup” workshop aimed at 10-16-year-olds. The workshop will be held at Jessica’s new space The Beautique, in Franklin.

Throughout the three-hour workshop, Jessica will demonstrate how to apply timeless, natural makeup, the importance of skincare, enhancing features with eyebrows, finishing touches and most importantly, staying true to yourself.

Meanwhile, Alaina will focus on “inner beauty,” including developing and growing self-confidence and self-esteem through understanding and identifying your own unique qualities, and building resilience by learning how to put problems into perspective.

The day will also include a grazing table, drinks and refreshments, and all participants will receive a goodie bag, a Shii Mii Inner Beauty worksheet and professional makeup/skincare guidance for any questions during an interactive “look and learn.”

Jessica says the idea for the workshop came via the requests she received as a makeup artist.

“I would just get so many requests from people asking how they can hide the dark circles under their eyes, or their freckles, or their pores,” she says.

“And I just thought, ‘well actually, those freckles, those dark circles are what make you unique and human.’ I wanted people to embrace their real beauty and realise this is how their face is supposed to be, rather than trying to live up to an overly photo shopped, unrealistic image.”

It’s an important message for a particularly vulnerable age group, who are often bombarded with images of flawless women. And with more than half of children using social media by age 10, Jess believes the workshop is an “early intervention” approach at tackling any self-confidence issues and unrealistic expectations that can come with that.

“Knowing the “right age” for young girls to start applying makeup, is definitely a tricky one,” Jess says.

“We believe the important thing is that when these young girls are introduced to makeup, that they are shown how to apply it the right way from the start, and are shown techniques that are timeless as well as age-appropriate.

“I’m hoping the participants will leave feeling more confident about themselves and addressing social media in a realistic way. We hope to hold more of these workshops in the future as I think it’s an essential message to get across at this age.”
