Shady playgrounds for summer

Emily Crabb

In the heat of summer, all you need is somewhere with generous shade…and maybe to be waited on by Channing Tatum with some champagne but that’s less important.

Here are six playgrounds with generous amounts of shade so your kids’ time in the sun is shorter and the temperature is cooler for everyone involved.

Yerrabi Pond District Park

Located by Yerrabi Pond in Gungahlin, this adventure park ticks all the boxes. In the hot summer months, the Yerrabi Pond Park offers play spaces with plenty of shade to keep you and the kiddies cool. This park offers shaded play equipment, grassy areas, a wheelchair accessible swing, toilets and BBQ areas.

With water breezes and lots of lush trees, this park is perfect for year round play. Yerrabi Park is only partially fenced and there is open water nearby so keep that in mind when you’re visiting with little ones.

SWhere: Wunderlich St, Gungahlin
Hours: Open 24 hours

Franklin Recreational Park

The Franklin Park offers separate play areas for toddlers, children, teens and adults. The whole family can enjoy shaded play over the summer holidays with the parks speciality equipment, large grassy areas, table tennis, undercover seating, BBQ facilities, bathrooms, a shaded skate park, gym equipment and an enclosed soccer/basketball court.

Monkey Mania

For a play experience that lets you avoid the sun completely, try Monkey Mania’s indoor playground. Boundless offers shaded and non-shaded areas for families to enjoy these summer holidays. Located alongside Lake Burley Griffin, kiddies and families can cool off in the shade of the trees and enjoy the breeze off the lake. This magical playground features aqua play stations, climbing frames, balancing challenges, swings, slides and sand.

Weston Park Playground
