The Explorers of Kingston

I often find it hard to believe that I live in the most densely populated suburb in Canberra.

The wide streets, old shop facades and leafy streetscapes hide the thousands of residents that call Kingston home. Having grown up in the suburbs of Sydney I was forced to drive or catch public transport to get to the action. I now relish living in Kingston’s vibrant hub.

It wasn’t until I got a dog that I really started to explore and appreciate my suburb. On our daily walks through Telopea Park, I am always surprised at the birdlife that abounds.

It is not unusual to hear the creaky gate calls of the Gang-Gang Cockatoo or see a family of White-winged Choughs launch into the air when they see us approaching.

As a Sex and the City fan, I often think of that strip of Telopea Park as being my own Central Park. And like Carrie, I will never want to sell my first apartment to move in with Mr Big.

When COVID hit and we were forced to work from home I became a regular at the Penny University cafe window. The arrangement is ideal as I’m able to take my dog for a mid-morning stroll and order my coffee with him by my side.

As we weave our way back along Giles Street, the garden beds have begun to bloom with Floriade: Reimagined. I didn’t realise that they had planted tulip bulbs until they started to pop up above the soil. It’s been lovely to see the local businesses adopt a garden bed and create flower window displays.

Living in the heart of Kingston means that it’s only a short stroll to an extensive array of international cuisine. I am spoilt for choice and it is often hard to decide whether I feel like a curry, an Italian pizza or one of the best burgers in Canberra at Brod.

What makes Brodburger so unique is that you get to choose what type of cheese to have on your burger. I arrived in Kingston after Brod was a permanent fixture at the Canberra Glassworks. I wish I could have visited the red caravan next to Lake Burley Griffin.

I couldn’t think of anywhere else I would rather walk my dog. I will continue to explore and cherish everything that Kingston has to offer.

FAQs

Do I have to live within the ACT to take part?

Nope! We love our surrounding “sister suburbs” of Bungendore, Braidwood, Yass, Queanbeyan, Sutton and beyond. If you feel like part of the HerCanberra community, we want to see your neighbourhood.

I have a private Instagram account; can I still take part?

It might be easiest for you to write us something about your suburb, as we can’t guarantee we’ll see the @hercanberra/#showusyourcbr tag in your stories if the Instagram account is set to private.
