Schlich Haus sets sleek design standards

Set high on a tree-lined street in Yarralumla, Schlich Haus redefines the concept of a dream home.

The new residence has been created by Monarch Building Solutions to showcase to the public how the boundaries of building and design can be pushed – then elevated to new heights.

The house offers a glimpse into the future of modern living, while providing a heady dose of interior inspiration along the way.

Open to the public by appointment until mid-December, Schlich Haus contains everything that opens and shuts. Literally.

From the enormous Silvertop Ash front door which is automatically connected to the security system and unlocks via remote control, to the dark grey velvet curtains in the custom-designed media room which glide seamlessly from one end to another after one small tug, this is an intuitive home which seems to be one step ahead of the whims of its inhabitants.

Lights in the powder room turn on as you walk through the door. High windows open at the press of a button, and throughout the home, the massive sliding doors and windows are silently screened as blinds lower from hidden recessed pelmets in the ceiling.

For prospective new homeowners wanting to be inspired by the latest building and design techniques, this is a home best seen first-hand.

Monarch director Marco, who guides us around the property, is clearly proud of all that has been achieved at Schlich Haus, which has been designed in association with architects Turco and Associates and leading Canberra interior design studio The Dept. of Design. Monarch only takes on a select few home projects each year in order to maintain standards and quality.

So it is this exacting detail of the finished product that Marco loves most. The shark-nosed custom-built drawers in the study, the sturdy, soft-closing drawers in each of the large built-in robes, the massive grey steel blades that rise alongside one side of the floating staircase, affording anyone upstairs a view of the imposing stone wall that centres the three-level home.

The grey steel blades are repeated in outside landscaping features, as are the long and slender bricks, which make an appearance inside to anchor floating shelves in the study.

No space has been wasted with the home offering bespoke storage in the form of floating shelves, floating desks, and hidden cupboards underneath built in benches. A large grey wall in the living room looks like a design feature. But behind each matt panel is a place for bits and pieces that would ruin the clean lines of the room.

Power points are hidden behind cupboards, and in the study a power box is hidden beneath the floorboards.

Even the lighting is unobtrusive with individually plastered lighting channels offering a streamlined solution to complement the high-end fittings.

Nowhere is the craftsmanship more obsessive than in the kitchen, where lines and patterns in the Calacatta marble island bench and splash back make a symmetrical and standout visual statement in the centre of the home.

Why mess up such an aesthetic masterpiece with kitchen detritus when a massive butler’ pantry can be used to prep a family feast. Similarly, the large laundry is accessed by a hidden panel door – meaning no one need air their dirty laundry.

Custom-made Italian bathroom fittings and stunning porcelain tiles help to further set this home apart. The Apaiser stone bath in the master en suite perfectly complements the numerous high-end finishes.

Even the walk through robe in the master reaches aspirational heights through its streamlined glass-topped jewellery drawer display.
