Five things to do this weekend that aren’t sitting on the couch (as much as we love the couch)

Posted on

Happy Saturday, Canberra.

As we roll into our sixth weekend of lockdown, we understand it can all seem a bit meh, especially with today’s grey forecast.

But hopefully, there’s at least one thing on this list that will lift your spirits and shake up your Groundhog Day weekends (and we bet it’s the dessert delivery ideas).

Let Canberra Theatre Centre curate your viewing

Our beloved Canberra Theatre Centre’s stages may be empty, but they’re bringing a slice of the theatre to your place with their weekly newsletter (which you can sign up for here).

This week, they recommend this playlist on SBS OnDemand of films and TV shows curated by The 7 Stages of Grieving Director and Bardi, Jabirr Jabirr woman Shari Sebbens, The Chaser Report podcast (hilarious) and an excerpt from White Pearl (pictured), which was due to play at CTC later this month (*wipes tear*).

This excerpt is part of Sydney Theatre Company’s At Home viewing platform STC Virtual which is a total treasure trove of free performances. Do yourself a favour and watch as some of Australia’s most talented actors (Miranda Tapsell! Hugo Weaving! Tim Minchin!) perform snippets from plays like Hamlet, The Harp in the South, Black is The New White and Lord of the Flies.

Eat your feelings—and support local!

Okay, I understand that many of us are trying to live our best lockdown lives with a carefully planned routine of actually putting on *real pants* for at-home work, going for our two hours of exercise, trying not to eat our feelings in lockdown and spring cleaning our lifestyles.

But for some of us, after the announcement that we’re in for four more weeks of lockdown, this weekend might just be the time to say “F*$k it!” and have a little splurge.

And by splurge, we mean ordering one of these decadent looking dessert boxes, some bougie fine dining takeaway or even a cheeky cocktail or two. The best part? You’ll be supporting our local businesses.

Read something new

Personally, I’ll be spending this rainy day tucked up with a book and if you’d like to do the same (hey, e-book delivery is instant, after all!) I’d suggest you check out these new reads by Sephora Scott, peppered with cute photos of her literary sidekick, Gary the Groodle.

Visit a (virtual) gallery

The National Gallery of Australia is opening its (virtual) doors for tours like no other with their Art From Home series.

Combining the chance to see the NGA’s impressive collections as you’ve never seen them before with opportunities for you and your family to create your own art, Art From Home gives you a new perspective on art and its relevance in these challenging times.

Throw a really extra picnic

Naturally, your regular weekend picnic will have to happen tomorrow, so why not spend today planning a super lush menu of portable goodies? Or even your outfit?

Start with this piece that walks you through a three-course picnic meal complete with homemade lemonade, but we also think my colleague Emma Macdonald’s nachos recipe would also travel well, as would these delicious salads.

As for where to picnic, we’ve got that covered too!
