Do you wanna build a snowman? Free-Rain brings the magic of Frozen to the stage

Some musical roles are simply too exciting to “let it go.”

Stepping into the iconic roles of Elsa and Anna for the Free-Rain Theatre Company production of Disney’s Frozen is a “thrilling, surreal” moment for Charlotte Morphett and Chloe Stevenson.

Running from 15 September to 11 October at The Q Performing Arts Centre, this local staging of the hit Broadway musical brings the beloved royal sisters of Arendelle to Queanbeyan.

“These characters are so iconic and so loved, so there is absolutely a sense of pressure that comes with stepping into their shoes,” Chloe says.

“But more than anything, it’s such an honour. People have grown up with these characters and this story, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring Anna and Elsa to life on stage and share Frozen with Canberra audiences.”

It’s also a full-circle moment for the pair, who knew each other years before rehearsals began: Charlotte was Chloe’s Drama and Performing Arts teacher from Year 7 through to Year 12, and more recently co-directed her as Juliet in & Juliet.

“Watching Chloe grow as a performer over many years and now experiencing this production alongside her as a peer is incredibly special,” Charlotte says.

Charlotte says the stage musical will expand significantly on the original animated movie, featuring several new songs written exclusively for the theatre production.

“The new songs give such a beautiful insight into the inner worlds of both Anna and Elsa: you get to understand so much more about what drives them, what they’re afraid of and what they’re longing for.

“For Elsa especially, there are moments where you really get to sit inside the conflict she’s experiencing, the fear of hurting the people she loves, the pressure of trying to control this enormous part of herself and the loneliness that comes with that. Anna’s journey is expanded too, and audiences get to see even more of her resilience, vulnerability and humour.

“The film gives us these characters we already love, but the stage musical lets us spend more time with them and understand them on another level.”

While the powerful bond between the two sisters drives the heart of the story, fans can rest assured the magical stage production won’t leave anyone behind: audiences will delight in seeing Olaf, Kristoff and his loyal hilarious reindeer sidekick Sven, alongside the charming Prince Hans of the Southern Isles.

And of course, it’s not just for the kids: Chloe assures us there’s actually “so much” in Frozen that adults can appreciate.

“Underneath all the magic, spectacle and songs people know and love, it’s a story about family, grief, fear, identity, relationships and figuring out who you are when the expectations placed on you don’t necessarily match the person you’re becoming,” she says.

With only a few weeks of rehearsals left, the duo are excited to “tell the guards to open up the gates” and welcome Canberra into Arendelle.

“We just can’t wait for people to see it,” Charlotte says.

“If you know and love Frozen, there are obviously all those iconic moments you’re hoping for, but there is also so much in the stage musical that audiences won’t have experienced through the film.

“There is something pretty incredible about experiencing this story with a live audience, particularly when you hear those first few notes of the songs everyone knows.”
