Rose-Mary Faulkner: the female form in 3D

Posted on

The Canberra Contemporary Art Space (CCAS) in Manuka aims to provide a unique environment for local artists to explore and present their work.

Once such artist is Rose-Mary Faulkner, whose exhibition, Profile, is currently showing at CCAS.

Through her honors degree at the ANU School of Art, Rose-Mary has mastered the art of layering imagery on glass to create unique pieces of three-dimensional art. This is achieved through transferring photography decals to glass through heat and water and then moulding the glasswork in order to emphasise the beauty of the natural female body, which is the focal point of Profile.

“The process works like a temporary tattoo, transferring the image through water onto a surface,” she explains.

The use of soft-focus photography and curved surfaces gives insight into a feminine view of self-image, as Rose-Mary hopes that her exhibition will not only appeal to the eye but question ideologies of body image and femininity.

“I questioned the role of gaze from myself, how it could be challenged in my work without overturning the concept,” she explains. On opening night, Rose-Mary says she was “chuffed to see the steady flow of viewers” admiring her work. The exhibition also houses her original photography alongside the glasswork, juxtaposing the two-dimensional and three-dimensional interpretations.

Rose aims to bring the simultaneously familiar and foreign experience of self-perspective into her artwork and says that she hopes that as a young female artist in Canberra, she can inspire others to pursue what can be deemed an unconventional career.

“It is possible, it takes a lot of focus and hard work but you can achieve it.”
