Five ideas for a summer staycation in Canberra
Posted on
Has COVID royally stuffed up your summer? Perhaps rain (literally) dampened your time away or you haven’t even managed to get time off?
Whatever the reason, if your summer has been more like a bummer, maybe a staycation is just what you need. Easy to arrange and with no travel time and ease of returning to your home if necessary, you shouldn’t knock a staycation until you’ve tried it.
Whether you’re looking for an escape that’s around the corner or a stone’s throw from Canberra, here are some ideas.
The Kindred

Don’t want to go too far? How about living the Braddon local lifestyle for a weekend in a chic apartment bedecked in locally-made goodness?
The Kindred is a spacious AirBnB nestled in a quiet Braddon street less than two minutes walk to Lonsdale and Mort streets. We’re talking breakfast at Barrio. We’re talking yoga at SOULutions. We’re talking lunch at Rye and drinks at Bacaro and dinner at The Italian Place and more cocktails at Alcove and then a short stumble home. Heaven.

A tiny house in a winery? Wine not?
You may not have heard of Cubby & Co before but you may very well have already seen it as their bell tents are nestled on the hillside of Mount Majura Winery, visible from the Majura Parkway.
What started with a single glamping-style tent on the hillside has expanded to two bell tents (Frank and Edgar) ideal for the summer months and a tiny home (Dinny) for cooler climates.
If you want to stay local and feel like you’re camping without bringing all the gear, this is the perfect nature escape.
Little National Hotel

If the sleek inner south is more your speed, why not spend a weekend at the Little National Hotel, where boutique accommodation meets a functional footprint?
With deeply Instagrammable rooms, award-winning beds and a location that puts you at the heart of Canberra’s cultural scene (think: NGA, NPG and NLA within walking distance plus all the goodness of Barton’s dining scene), the Little National Hotel will inject a little luxury into your staycation.
The most difficult challenge of your weekend will be choosing between the delicious dining destinations a stone’s throw from your room.

Wildernest

Okay, this isn’t really a staycation (being 90 minutes from Canberra) but stick with it. Want to swap the big smoke for the big chill? Wildernest‘s three cabins in the Southern Highlands will make you want to escape to the country, if only for a weekend.
With a focus on slow living, small carbon footprints and unplugged escapes, Wildernest is located only 90 minutes from Canberra and offer pristine bush escapes for the ultimate quiet weekend away.
Hotel Mottainai

Another option for de-camping closer to home is Hotel Mottainai, named after the Japanese term for something being wasted without its value being realised, a name which will become obvious in a moment.
Built on the second floor of a disused office building on London Circuit in the city (a stone’s throw from The Cupping Room, Saint Malo, Fav Cup Cafe and Bar Rochford), Hotel Mottainai is an art-lovers paradise. Only available to one set of guests at a time, Hotel Mottainai is an achingly cool apartment-style space with an industrial flavour, perfect for pretending you live in the city for a weekend.
