Where to find some of Canberra’s best sandwiches – the second bite

Posted on

It’s time to sink your teeth into part two of where to find some of Canberra’s best sandwiches.

Earlier this year we wrote about how the humble sandwich is experiencing quite the comeback – and it looks like this food trend is still on a roll (…get it?). So, it feels only right to take a second bite and share a few more options around town.

Perfect for a filling grab-and-go lunch on a busy workday or when you need to sink your teeth into something carby and crusty, here are five more places to get an excellent sandwich in Canberra.

Blue Olive Café (City)

Specialising in New York-style sandwiches that are made fresh, Blue Olive is a popular haunt for city workers seeking a sandwich – and it’s not hard to see why.

With plenty of options to choose from (ranging from classic combinations like chicken schnitzel, Swiss cheese, mayo and lettuce to mouthwatering flavours like chorizo, olives, tasty cheese, tomato chilli jam and spinach) these sandwiches are stacked. Order one for yourself – fresh or toasted. There are even gluten-free options available!

Open Monday to Friday, 7 am – 3 pm | 56 Alinga Street, City | blueolivecafe.com.au

Cafe Bistrot CBD (City)

Bringing easy grab-and-go Italian goodies to Civic regulars craving something wholesome and warm in this wintery weather, at Café Bistrot CBD you’ll find fully loaded focaccias and toasties filled with the flavours of Italy.

From focaccia filled with homemade roast pork, provolone, cheese, fresh tomatoes, rocket and aioli to a Caponata sandwich on wholewheat miche, stuffed with eggplant, capsicum, and more, your lunch break has never looked so good.

Open Monday to Friday, 6 am – 3 pm | 20 Genge Street, City | cafebistrotcbd.com.au

Italian and Son’s Focaccia Bar (Braddon)

Serving a range of lunch-time specials using 72-hour naturally risen sourdough, all baked in-house, during the week at Italian and Son’s you’ll find their new Focaccia Bar – and it’s delicious.

All made fresh to order, they’re served hot out of the oven to be sliced and dressed in a selection of authentic Italian ingredients. With seven choices in all, which you can choose to eat in or take away, they’ve even perfected a gluten-free focaccia, baked daily from the wood-fired oven. We promise that it’s every bit as good as the original.

Open Wednesday to Friday, 11.30 am – 2.30 pm | 7 Lonsdale Street, Braddon | italianandsons.com.au

Fox and Bow (Farrer and Red Hill)

For those seeking more of a brunch-ier sandwich option, Fox and Bow has you covered. Serving up toasties and rolls, from the moreish combination of smashed avo with house hash, caramelised onions, BBQ sauce, baby spinach, tasty cheese and aioli to grilled smokey-streaky bacon, a pasture-raised egg, melted jack cheese, house-made tomato relish, and crispy iceberg lettuce, you’ll want to sink your teeth into one of these.

Open Monday to Friday, 7 am – 2.30 pm and Saturday to Sunday, 7.30 am – 2 pm | Shop 4, Farrer Place, Farrer and 10 Duyfken Place, Red Hill | foxandbow.com.au

Mokka (Erindale)

Panini, focaccia, wraps and sandwiches – at Mokka in Erindale you’ll find plenty of crunchy, carby and comforting lunchtime options. And because it’s been brought to life by the team behind the award-winning Little Theo’s in Kambah, you know that the fresh flavours will pack a punch.

The must-try? The Reuben, toasted to perfection of course. But the Salami with schiacciata basil pesto, pine nuts, rocket, sun-dried tomato, roasted red capsicum, mozzarella, and grated provolone also sounds amazing…

Open Monday to Sunday, from 7 am | 68 Comrie Street, Shop 15, Wanniassa | @mokka_cbr
