Your guide to the 2026 Canberra Balloon Spectacular
Posted on
As dawn breaks over the nation’s capital this March, a kaleidoscope of colour will fill the sky during the annual Canberra Balloon Spectacular.
Set against the backdrop of Lake Burley Griffin, the Canberra Balloon Spectacular is Australia’s longest-running hot air balloon festival, first taking to the sky in 1986 thanks to Balloon Aloft Canberra.
Now – over 35 years later – the festival has become a hallmark autumn event, transforming Canberra’s horizon into a floating canvas of giant hot air balloons across nine mornings.
Drawing thousands of early risers annually, whether you’re new to town or haven’t experienced it for yourself, here’s everything you need to know about the 2026 Canberra Balloon Spectacular – from the best viewpoints, to where to get that much-needed morning coffee.
When and where is it happening?
This year, the Canberra Balloon Spectacular is taking place from Saturday 14 until Sunday 22 March.
The 2026 festival will also be returning to Patrick White Lawns in Parkes, giving attendees the chance to get up close and personal with the balloons as they prepare to lift off.
However, it’s worth noting that there’s no guarantee the balloons will launch each morning. Daily flight announcements will be made around 6 am on the Canberra Balloon Spectacular website and the Events ACT Facebook page to confirm if the weather conditions will allow the balloons to take off. Make sure you have those notifications on!
If the weather is favourable, balloons begin inflating from 6 am, with most balloons taking to the sky by 7 am.
If balloons can’t fly, some may be inflated and tethered at Patrick White Lawns so visitors can walk among them, take photos and enjoy breakfast from the food trucks and coffee carts. Either way, it will be worth getting up early for.

Where are the best viewpoints?
If you don’t want to brave Patrick White Lawns, there are plenty of vantage points across Canberra that will offer spectacular views of the festival.
Head along to Lake Burley Griffin, the Arboretum, Regatta Point, Mount Ainslie lookout, or Red Hill lookout – the balloon flight paths will depend on the weather so they’re all good options to consider.
What are the special balloons this year?
This year Finley the Turtle will be making his Australian debut at the 2026 Canberra Balloon Spectacular as the festival’s special‑shaped feature balloon, helping to shine a light on turtle conservation efforts across Australia.
Travelling all the way from the UK after making his maiden flight in Qatar last month, Finley will be joining 40 other hot air balloons that will be filling the Canberra skyline with movement and colour during the event.
Where can I get food and coffee?
For those viewing the balloons from Patrick White Lawns, there will be plenty of food and drink suppliers to keep you full and happy.
Every day of the festival, you can get a hot breakfast from L’épi Bakery, Grain & Grill Café, Saccharum Espresso, Brenda’s Batch & Brew and Le Petit Breton Authentic French Crepes. On the weekends, Kerb Side Coffee will also have stalls operating.
Looking for more? Rosa’s in the National Rose Gardens is open from 7.30 am on weekdays and 8 am on weekends; you can get coffee, assorted baked goods or a gourmet toastie from Margot from 6.30 am on weekdays or 7 am on weekends; or you can pop down to The Jetty from 7 am every day. Or pack a picnic!

What else do I need to keep in mind?
Plan ahead and arrive early at your chosen location (at least 30 to 45 minutes before the scheduled launch time is recommended) and bring something warm because Canberra mornings can be chilly!
Parking within the National Triangle is limited, so it is also worth thinking about how you’ll be getting there. Consider parking in the city or along Lake Burley Griffin and walking, riding or scooting to the festival (just note scooters, bicycles and tricycles are not permitted on the balloon launch site) or catching public transport.
Finally, enjoy the moment! It’s a one-of-a-kind event that’s not to be missed.
