Five (quieter) indoor play date options
Posted on
Kids may love them but for many adults like yours truly, noisy indoor play centres aren’t exactly a soothing experience.
The loud music, flashing lights and overcrowded, enclosed spaces do something to my already busy mind that leaves me pacing the floors, searching for the nearest exit sign/escape route. Likewise, depending on their mood, overly hectic spaces can leave my kids overwhelmed and in tantrum-central.
But what can you do if it’s yet another rainy day and the little ones are itching to get out and burn some energy? We’ve rounded up five indoor ideas for those in need of a more relaxed atmosphere, where the kids can blow off steam and, importantly, parents can get some much-needed peace (and maybe even a good coffee).
PlayUP at Museum of Australian Democracy Old Parliament House
With a special “Kindness Café” for kids, listening pods, story time and facilitated craft sessions, PlayUP encourages thoughtful, imaginative play. For the parents, there’s a café in the building and plenty of cosy corners with beanbags to relax on while little ones let their imaginations run wild.
18 King George Terrace, Parkes (facilitated craft runs from 10:30am to 12:30pm and story time is at 12pm every day.) | moadoph.gov.au
Discovery Centre at the National Museum of Australia
Given it’s a ticketed experience with five sessions per day, this new state-of-the-art play space for kids 0-6 years is pleasant for both kids and adults alike. There are dedicated spaces in different areas which encourage people to spread out, along with reading zones (think ultra comfy chairs), climbing equipment, soft play and immersive experiences to spark curiosity.

National Dinosaur Museum
If your little ones love roarsome creatures, this museum is an excellent choice for a drizzly day. There’s plenty of interactive, moving dinos to get hearts racing and even a special chill out area downstairs with dino books and movies on display.

Mini Q at Questacon
Mini Q holds several sessions each day with a capacity limit for each time, meaning it rarely gets too crowded or noisy. There’s everything from imaginative cafes to water play (it can be worth bringing a change of clothes for that reason!) For the parents, there’s an abundance of seating and beautiful windows overlooking the leafy landscape.

Giggle and Wiggle/Story Time
Ideal for younger kids, Giggle and Wiggle (0-2 years) and Story Time (3-5 years) are held in various public libraries across Canberra. Giggle and Wiggle includes songs, dancing and rhymes, while Story Time is a chance to connect over a good book. Registration is essential for each event.
