Classic constructions rising around Canberra

A family-run Canberra building company is rising to the challenge of turning client dreams of domestic bliss into a built reality.

Jason Tanchevski has a favourite part of his job as a Director at Classic Constructions. It is the part that comes with handing over the keys to a brand new home that a family has dreamt of and his company has turned into a bricks-and-mortar reality.

“There’s so much joy – and often a few happy tears – when it comes time for the handover. It is the end of an intense period of contact between the client and our company but it is never the end of the relationship.”

Classic Constructions has been growing in Canberra since founders Michael (Jason’s dad) and his brother George Tanchevski moved from Wollongong to start the business more than 30 years ago.

Things started small – some spec homes in the fledgeling suburb of Jerramomberra and then across to Conder and Banks as those parts of the city started to take shape.

The brothers always had a passion for quality and strived to give their customers a home that would reflect their personality as well as provide a practical domestic setting that suited their unique family requirements.

In fact, Jason remembers feeling slightly resentful about the building industry as a child. It was, after all, the very thing that kept his dad working long and hard hours.

But that was 30 years ago. And now Jason has notched up nearly 20 years with the company himself, alongside his cousin Jon (George’s son).

Jason and Jon came to building of their own volition – Jason gradually being drawn to the industry after finishing school and getting a qualification in Construction Management, and Jon after a career in accounting.

Now the company is known for producing some of the finest homes in the capital.

“Our expertise is to really focus on custom-designed family homes in the mid-range price bracket,” said Jason.

Just recently, Classic Constructions won the prestigious Home of the Year award at the HIA-CSR ACT and Southern NSW Housing Awards.

The company’s stunning Narrabundah property “The Kew”, also took out the Display Home of the Year category, before winning the top honour.

According to HIA Executive Director, Greg Weller, “Winning a housing award is a true mark of success in the residential building industry and showcases to the public what they can expect from an award-winning HIA member”.

For Jason, Kew is a beautiful space which allows people to see the sort of quality inclusions and design dreams that his company can achieve.

The home is open to the public and located on 104 Captain Cook Crescent in Narrabundah.

It is a sleek and modern family home which takes every advantage of its position on the street and yet provides a private oasis inside.

The Kew features a kitchen like no other.

The kitchen and living areas are something to behold and one feature which will have every home entertainer looking to take a sledgehammer to their existing kitchen is a stunning butler’s pantry which is open where a traditional splash back would feature.

It creates a sort of optical illusion and is one of Jason’s favourite features.

“I love watching people’s reactions when they realise it is not a mirror but an open void. I think it really is a dream kitchen in terms of looks and practicality.”

“The way people are living is changing. The use of space in any home is important both for the current residents and for those who may reside there in the future. Multi-functional rooms with timeless design and aesthetics, that was our goal. A home that connects outdoors with the indoor and also connects to the future of technology and sustainability,” he said.

The home is open to the public between 11 am and 3 pm every weekend.

“We understand that a display can offer a lot, we also understand the need for our clients to be able to pick and choose elements within the home to adjust to a budget.”
